In those places of the cold hells, there is no shelter of clothes, houses, or walls. They are separated from the light of fire and the sun. Due to the cold, they dwell by the water's edge, in valleys, or on open plains, where snow and wind strike the body, causing extreme cold. As a result, blisters appear on the bodies of beings born there, from what is called "A-chu" onwards, up to the suffering of frostbite. Even more extreme, the body turns blue like an উৎপལ་ flower, splitting into five petals, turns red like a lotus, splitting into ten petals, and like a great lotus, splitting greatly into sixteen petals, causing suffering. It is said that the lifespan of those cold hells is: From within a sesame pod, a hundred years pass for each seed removed. When all the sesame seeds are removed, the lifespan is exhausted. The lifespan of the blister hell is like this, The lifespan of others is increased twentyfold. As it is said, the lifespan is also extremely long. We also do not have the assurance of not being born in all those hellish places. On top of not having assurance, if we take a wrong step, it is easy to fall. Therefore, it is crucial to repeatedly contemplate those suffering scenes and generate a mind of fear and dread. Moreover, it is difficult for us Jambudvipa dwellers to believe, so merely hearing, seeing, and thinking is not enough. We need to think from the depths of our hearts to generate faith, as Sharawa said. The standard for generating faith through meditation, Sharawa himself said, should be at least like the two nephews of the venerable Ananda. That is, when King Pasenadi condemned the Shakyas and issued a verbal punishment, a merchant remained in Shravasti. He said to two orphans, "Do you not have anyone you recognize?" They said, "There is an uncle named Ananda." So the merchant took them to Jetavana and entrusted them to Ananda. He had them study there, but they were too delicate and could not endure it, so he entrusted them to Maudgalyayana's son. Initially, they were ordained because they were good, but they were still delicate and could not endure it. So he asked them, "Do you want to see the lower toilet?" and showed them hell, which terrified them. When they remembered hell at mealtime, they walked as if their eyes were blindfolded. When they remembered it after eating, they would vomit even the contents of their intestines, becoming very emaciated. Should they be taken to the toilet?

It is said that doing so will also lead to studying here. Similarly, it is said that one must meditate until faith arises. Then, contemplating the suffering of pretas, starting with mindfulness, it is said that there are thirty-six different kinds of pretas. If all of these are summarized, the noble Asanga said that they can be categorized into two types: pretas who dwell in a place and pretas who wander in the sky. The pretas who dwell in a place are located five hundred yojanas below this Jambudvipa. Some of the pretas who dwell there, from the time of their birth, do not even hear the names of food and drink for many years, so they cannot find food, etc. at all. Even if they find a little bit once in a hundred times, they see a man born from their own karma guarding it with weapons, so they cannot eat or drink it. Their flesh and blood dry up, and their bodies become like withered trees, etc. They have such suffering, which is an external obscuration. Internal obscuration means that even if no one else obstructs them, they cannot find food and drink in the first place. Even if they find a little bit, it cannot enter their mouths, which are as small as the eye of a needle. Even if it enters, their throats are as thin as needles, so it cannot pass through, and their stomachs cannot reach the size of a mountain peak. Whenever it enters their stomachs, it does not satisfy them, but instead they experience the suffering of their internal organs being burned, etc. The obscuration of food and drink means that they cannot find food and drink in the first place. Even if they find a little bit, it turns into pus, blood, and sparks, etc., and they have the suffering of not being able to eat it. Among these, some outcasts cannot even find pus, feces, blood, and other impure things. They fight each other, digging out ripe pus from their throats to eat. Speaking of the suffering of distorted perception, for these beings, in the summer, the moon is hot, and in the winter, the sun is cold. These trees become fruitless, and merely by being seen by them, rivers dry up. It is said that there is also the suffering of action. The pretas who wander in the sky are ghosts and demons, etc., all of these kinds that currently cause harm to humans. For these, there are also sufferings such as heat, cold, hunger, thirst, fear, fatigue, etc., which are roughly the same as the previous ones, as well as the minds of dogs and pretas...
