Clothes. Therefore, it is necessary to listen. This is guided by the oral instructions of the lama. By reading many sutras and treatises, understanding the workings of cause and effect, and through prior listening and contemplation, one should initially contemplate the ripening of the fruits of non-virtuous actions, thereby generating fear of their suffering and lifespan. This will then lead to a turning away from the causes. Therefore, one should first meditate on the faults of the results. Moreover, there is nothing more frightening in this life than death. As Putowa said, birth is more frightening than death. Among births, if one is born in the lower realms, there is nothing more frightening than that. Therefore, one should summarize its suffering and meditate on it in order from large to small. Regarding this, if we take the suffering of sentient beings in hell as an example, Sharawa said in the Letter to a Friend: 'Here, the pain of being stabbed violently by three hundred short spears in a single day, even the smallest suffering of hell, one cannot bear, let alone the great suffering.' Just like that, human suffering cannot exceed that limit, and even so, it cannot be compared to the smallest suffering of hell. For us now, if a spark of fire falls on bare flesh, or even a small spark falls on the flesh, how much heat there would be. Compared to mindfulness, near the flames of hell, human fire is as cool as snow or clouds. Putowa said that if a person's entire body is burned in fire, if a dab of sandalwood camphor ointment is applied to any part of the body, one will get a moment of coolness. Similarly, when burned in the flames of hell, if human fire touches any part, there will be heat waves like getting a moment of coolness. Similarly, all the sufferings and lifespans of all eighteen hell realms must be meditated upon in detail. Generally, the location of hell is said to be from the fifteenth level below, thirty-two thousand yojanas below Jambudvipa, where the first hot hell, the Hell of Revival, is located. From the Treasury of Knowledge: 'Twenty thousand yojanas below this is the Avici Hell, and its extent is the same.' It is also said that twenty thousand yojanas below this Jambudvipa is the lowest of the hot hells, called Avici Hell.

It is said in the scriptures that according to the previous accounts, there are four thousand yojanas from the Reviving Hell to other places. To the north of it, beyond ten thousand yojanas, are the Cold Hells. It is also said that they exist on the shores of the Near Sea and in other places. As for the Peripheral Hells, according to the *Abhidharmakośa*, each side of each Hot Hell has four pits of burning embers, making a total of sixteen. The *Satipaṭṭhāna Sūtra* mentions sixteen additional different places. In any case, regarding the forms of suffering in the eighteen hells, the first of the eight Hot Hells is the Reviving Hell, where there are no hell guardians or harm from fire. The beings in hell see each other as enemies, and whatever they pick up turns into weapons, with which they kill each other, tearing and slashing with their claws. Then, a voice comes from the sky saying, "Be revived!" and their bodies revive as before, and they kill each other again, dying a hundred times each day, experiencing the suffering of a hundred revivals. Regarding this, Sharawa said, "In the Reviving Hell, one dies a hundred times a day and revives a hundred times. If this were the hell's own day and night, the suffering would not be too great, but if it is a human day and night, it would be unbearable." It is indeed a human day and night. As it is said, "Here, in one day, three hundred short spears pierce," etc. Only he himself knows this, as said by Paldenpa, the abbot of Narthang Monastery. The second is the Black Line Hell, where the hell guardians have the heads of pigs, snakes, and oxen, with mouths agape. They seize all the beings born there and draw black lines on their bodies, either vertically or horizontally, and then cut, split, and chop them with axes and other tools. When the lower body is cut, the upper body revives, and when the upper body is cut, the lower body revives, so they are constantly being cut apart, causing great suffering. The third is the Crushing Hell, where the hell guardians seize the beings born there and place them between two mountains shaped like the heads of rams or sheep, crushing their bodies and causing blood to flow. When the two mountains separate, the bodies revive, and they are crushed again as before, causing great suffering. Moreover, on the iron ground, iron bulls with flaming hooves trample them. The fourth is the Howling Hell, where the mind
