Etc. were said. At that time, the consciousness belonging to this life ceases here. The consciousness of the next life and beyond, like a spark of fire. Like a broken pot string, or like a bird escaping from a net, or like a fly with its eyes gouged out, leaving behind, this body is left behind like a stone. It doesn't matter if it's burned, it doesn't matter if it's thrown into the water, it doesn't matter if it's given to birds and dogs, etc. When life is exhausted, warmth disappears, and consciousness departs, whenever this body is abandoned, it will lie there like a log. As it is said, the body is left behind like a stone and a log and departs. At that time, when time presses, even the king must depart, enjoyment, friends, and relatives will not follow. Wherever sentient beings go, karma follows like dirt. As it is said, those who have done evil deeds will be greeted by bad appearances from this life onwards. It is also the same in the bardo. Extremely terrifying, from this side to that side, a span's distance. Thorny thorns are densely packed, on terrifying roads. The messengers of the Lord of Death bind from the neck with ropes of time, and fierce people drive and lead with sticks. It is said that various bad appearances like these will appear. Therefore, Geshe Potowa said that there is a way to avoid fainting, just as he said. When we are about to die, it is important to strive now for the cause of not having such bad appearances. So, what is that cause? By making oneself enter Buddhism, meditating on the greatness of the cause and effect of dependent origination of Buddhism, and having deep faith in it. First, in the place where limbs are amputated, even being taken there today will cause fear. Dry mouth, dark eye sockets, etc., if appearances different from before appear. The messengers of the Lord of Death, like terrifying executioners, if caught by fleshy fellows. Being struck by a great terrifying disease, extremely weak, what more needs to be said? Who will save me well from this great terror? Widening terrified eyes, searching for refuge in all four directions. Seeing that there is no refuge in all four directions, then one will be completely frustrated. If there is no refuge there, then what should I do? Like the thought said in the "Entering the Path of Enlightenment", then

As it is said in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: "The earth is the protector of the victorious beings, diligently striving to save beings, the mighty one who dispels all fears, from this very day I take refuge." Or Sharawa said, "Meditating on the qualities of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha is the most important teaching." The teacher said in the Ratnāvalī: "Liberated from all faults, adorned with all virtues, the sole friend of all sentient beings, I prostrate to the all-knowing one." Or in the Praise of the Supreme God, it is said: "In whom there are no faults, and who possesses immeasurable virtues, all-knowing and compassionate, I take refuge in that one." Thus, contemplating the greatness of the refuge, the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and thereby developing faith in them, as mentioned before, is the time to generate common refuge. Therefore, take it up, learn what should be learned, and become a Buddhist. Once you have become a Buddhist, the Buddha you have taken refuge in will protect you. Therefore, contemplate the greatness of karma and its results, which are the root of the Dharma. As mentioned before, due to the key of impermanence, we will not remain in this life, and we will surely die. After death, we will not be annihilated and cease to exist, as the materialists believe, but will be reborn again. Rebirth is not the transference of this aggregate to another place. Nor does it arise from causelessness and conditionlessness, as the outsiders believe. Nor does it arise from unfavorable causes created by other beings such as Īśvara. Nor does it arise from self-will, which arises as one pleases. So, from what does it arise? The Suhrllekha says: "Aggregates are not born from self-will, nor from time, nor from nature, nor from self, nor created by Īśvara, nor do they arise suddenly without cause, know that they arise from ignorance, karma, and craving, as said by the Sugata." Thus, one is reborn under the control of one's own karma and afflictions. Therefore, whatever white or black causes are accumulated, happiness and suffering will arise as a result. Therefore, one should know that happiness and suffering are the results of karma, and one should carefully adopt and abandon from the subtlest level. Faith in karma and its results also arises from practice; it does not arise merely from hearing and occasionally thinking about it superficially, so one must practice. One must understand this
