My body, which has the nature of decay, when will it become equal? As it is said, the monks went to the cemetery, and after looking at the new and old corpses, they thought, 'I am also of such a nature,' and so on. Since we do not have a definite cemetery, from the time we can remember, we have counted the number of men, women, and monks who have died in our hometown, using rosary beads, and then thought, 'I am also of such a nature,' and so on. When Geshe Phuchungwa was living in Darkar Monastery, even when he went to Nyiwo Ridangkar to sell butter, he would spread out his fingers and count the number of people who had died, saying, 'This one has died, that one has died.' When he returned, even if it was raining and there were drops, he would not wipe them off, but would roll up the cushion and lean on it, only making sounds. Also, when Phuchungwa was living in Wobo and Putowa was living in Nyenpo, Sharawa and the two of them arranged the time for Dharma in the morning and afternoon on the top of Nyenpo Mountain. In that place behind the rock, there were many clay stupa houses or places like lecture halls, and they would say, 'That person called so-and-so has died, that person called so-and-so has died,' and then say, 'Alas, they have already died,' and think in this way. Similarly, the external impermanence also symbolizes the internal impermanence, so observe the changes in the colors of the external world of vessels in spring, summer, autumn, and winter, or the rise and fall of rivers, or the waxing and waning of the moon. When will I be able to reach equality from the arising and ceasing of the waves on the water's edge in the meadow, to the similarity of the world of existence? As it is said, I also think that my life is so impermanent. If I think in various ways like this, and truly understand impermanence, others will have compassion for me, and I will always live happily. As it is said. Therefore, thinking about death is the most important thing. Sharawa said, 'Now, all the vows, high and low, have not been determined, and how sharp are the eyes of this life, how swift are the wings, and the methods of pursuing greatness and smallness in this life are all because of not understanding impermanence. If impermanence is understood, Putowa'

Just as there is no need to do all the things that eliminate suffering, Geshe himself said, "My greatest method for dispelling appearances is meditating on death." Because of clinging to this life, being attached to close relationships and the enjoyment of wealth, eliminating the thought that appearances are beautiful and samsara is enjoyable, thereby preparing for future lives, this is the greatest method for dispelling appearances. If you don't take root here, then all the higher Dharma will become empty talk and useless. If you don't understand this, even if you verbally say you have a higher Dharma, it's like someone pretending to have a mental illness but wanting butter to nourish the body, or saying they want to do moxibustion. Claiming to be Mahayana when not being Mahayana, like a donkey wearing a lion's skin, sentient beings will fall into the great hell. It goes as (the scripture) says. If you understand this, then all the Dharmas above that will naturally come. If you don't take root here, you won't be able to overcome obstacles and cross difficulties. It is said that Jowo (Atisha) said that all the Spya sgom (name of a person) received teachings from Khar sar paṇi (name of a person). By reading the Sutra of the Meeting of Father and Son, it seems that he has realized the profound meaning. It's like being whipped for not contemplating impermanence, and covering up what is not humane with the name of humanity. If you understand impermanence and take root here, you will be able to overcome obstacles and cross difficulties like Geshe Nyenton. Therefore, the Bhagavan (Shakyamuni Buddha) did not even teach the secret of face-to-face instruction with deities to the best benefactor, friend, and disciple, King Selgyal (name of a king), but started by teaching about impermanence. "Great King, four great mountains come from the four directions," and so on. Then he said, "Great King, in the same way, four things will come: old age, sickness, decay, and death. For these, it is not easy to escape quickly, or to resist with the strength of a powerful man and lions, or to resist with substances, mantras, and medicine. Old age destroys youth. Sickness destroys health. Decay destroys all perfections. Death destroys life." And so on. At the time of death, the mouth and nose will be distorted, the teeth will chatter, and one will beg for charity, and so on.
