The causes for being born as lepers and other sixteen kinds of disabilities, and for any sentient being, especially stealing the clothes of those who hold vows, destroying Dharma halls, slandering the noble ones, etc., it is also said that there are countless causes for being born in the cold hells. In the Perfection of Wisdom, abandoning the Dharma itself is the greatest sin, said to be the cause of rebirth in Avici hell. In the tantric teachings, it is also recorded that breaking the vows and commitments with the guru is the greatest sin, said to be the cause of rebirth in the Vajra Hell. Sharawa said: The common cause for ordinary temples and renunciants to be born in the burning hell is the current fighting within families. If sectarian conflicts occur, as stated in the Root Tantra of Manjushri: creating disputes, or creating two opposing regions, or creating any one of them, even if birds die on that land, they will be reborn in Avici hell. Regarding the specific causes of being born as a hungry ghost, Acharya Nagarjuna said: Thus, the various sufferings experienced by hungry ghosts, the single taste of which is, the cause is that people delight in stinginess, and the Buddha said that stinginess is not a noble act. As it is said, delighting in stinginess, obstructing others from giving, being stingy with one's own enjoyment, also stealing the livelihood of special places, taking the property of the Sangha without giving it, stealing the entrance to the Sangha's assembly, damaging the essence of the Sangha's food, giving impure food to those who do not eat impure food, changing offerings, etc., these are all causes of being born as a hungry ghost. If one does not abandon these, even if one enters the gate of the Great Vehicle Tantra and possesses subtle samadhi, one cannot block the gate of being born as a hungry ghost, just like the story of the Yamantaka yogi, as Sharawa said. That is, the glorious Yamantaka yogi, a yogi who could visualize the three-faced, six-armed form within a small barley grain, thought, "I possess such samadhi, so I will not be harmed by these small karmas." Therefore, he did not give the husks of the barley harvested by the Sangha to the Sangha but consumed them himself, and as a result, he was born as a hungry ghost. In a monastery, there was a great meditator.

Having settled in a Torma dish. Once, that meditator stayed in another village for a few days, and when he returned to the monastery and lay down, a figure with three faces and six arms appeared before him and said, "I have been hungry while you were away, quickly give me the Torma." When asked for the reason, he said, "The workings of karma are inconceivable. I am a subtle yogi of the executioner of Yama, having attained Samadhi. I enjoyed the food of the Sangha without permission, so I was born as a hungry ghost. You have a little Bodhicitta, so the Torma you gave me was helpful to me, now I am hungry, quickly ask for the Torma." It is said that this story is a teaching of Lord Atisha. The specific causes for being born as an animal are: not relying on a virtuous spiritual friend, not listening to the sacred Dharma, and even if encountering the objects of the Three Jewels, not generating faith in them. It is said that even slight verbal misconduct can be a cause for being born as an animal. In the past, in the teachings of Buddha Kashyapa, a disciple of a Khenpo said to the Khenpo, "You are like a monkey." As a result, he was born as a monkey for five hundred lifetimes. One Bhikshuni said to another Bhikshuni, "You are like a female dog." As a result, she was born as a dog for five hundred lifetimes. Furthermore, those who die of thirst are born as aquatic animals. It is also said that those who have impure vows, impure aspirations, and use the property of the Sangha are born as Nagas. In short, the result of the maturation of non-virtuous actions, as mentioned before, will lead you to any of the unfortunate realms. Therefore, it is said in the "Garland of Jewels": "This result of human existence, the first of all is falling into the lower realms." After that, even if one is born as a human being out of a hundred, there will still be a result similar to the cause. The Sutra says: "The result similar to the cause of killing, even if one is born as a human being out of a hundred, two matured results will manifest: short life and many illnesses." And so on, for each of the ten non-virtuous actions, two results are mentioned, all of which were summarized by Master Nagarjuna in the "Garland of Jewels": "Killing leads to short life, harming leads to many harms, stealing leads to poverty."
