Sa. If someone speaks ill of one's own lama, one should fold one's hands and pray, saying, "Because this is my lama, please do not speak." If the prayer is not heard, one should cover one's ears and not listen. It is said that hearing it will lead to hell. Jowo Wangchuk Yungnu made something like a left-handed contract, and as a result, it was altered. Later, when Geshe Tonpa heard about this, he said, "You must never tell me such a thing. If I hear such a thing, I will not stay here, I will go to Dokham. If I went after hearing such a thing, I would not go because hearing the faults of the great Jowo would lead to hell." Saying this, he showed such respect to the great Jowo. If one knows to do this and is grateful for doing so, then relying on this, from loving-kindness and compassion to the mind of enlightenment, it will also become better, and this is the root of the Mahayana Dharma. The vows of tantra, and all the precepts of dwelling and abiding spoken of in the Vinaya of the Holy Dharma, are also included here, it is said. Secondly, there is also the need for a reliable source. Shara himself said: "The Tibetans are also not a reliable source of Dharma. The Chinese also like to create and add things, and they translate it into exaggerated statements twice, so the source is unreliable. The source of Dharma is India, and because the Dharma came from there, it is written in Indian language at the head of the book, so it is for the sake of reliable meaning. In the past, when the rules were not broken, there was nothing in the Tibetan original. The Chinese original is called Chinese. Even if it is translated from India, if it is not revised with new terms and not proofread, the Indian language, proofreading, and the king's seal are all outside. All of these are determined by everyone, and the head of the book is written in Indian language, and the proofreading and the king's seal are also affixed below, and then it is preserved. In the middle, the Dharma declined. Because there was no king's law, all the Tibetan originals were also added with Indian language. All the Chinese originals thought that something was missing, so they were also added, so now everything is mixed up. That's all for this matter. Other things to practice, in the past, worldly marriages were also called Chana, and they attached great importance to a reliable source, so we liberated ones...

To achieve accomplishment and omniscient wisdom, what is the use of going to just anyone without a reliable basis? Learning casually will not yield results. A reliable basis is very important. As Potowa said: First, when taking refuge vows, the teacher must be someone who has already attained Buddhahood. If Apo has not attained it, it is not acceptable. From the perspective of individual liberation vows, when taking lay vows, the teacher must be someone who deeply believes in the greatness of karma and its results. When requesting an abbot and karmacharya for ordination and full ordination, it is said in the Vinaya: "One who possesses discipline and knows the rules of conduct, is compassionate to the sick and has a pure retinue, diligently benefits with Dharma and wealth, and gives timely instructions is praised as a teacher." As it is said, one who has been a fully ordained monk for ten years and possesses any of the twenty-one qualities of the five groups is required. The teacher must also possess the five groups. The so-called compassionate sangha refers to those who do not covet wealth and possess complete virtues. The teacher who teaches reading should also be selected from the logical texts. If the vows of the teacher and student are broken and they are far from their own practice, then listening will not only not bring actual benefits but will also have faults. Therefore, one should rely on elderly teachers who are proficient in scriptures and reasoning, abide in their own practice, and compassionately teach others. Someone asked: It is not enough to adorn oneself only with practice, what should one do if one wants to make more connections with the Dharma of the Great Vehicle? The answer was: Be very respectful, but do not associate with them, this is the key instruction. If you associate with them, you may lose faith in their actions. When you do not understand, you should maintain faith and respect for all those with whom you have made Dharma connections, otherwise we Kadampas will throw ten sentences of advice into the water. Those who have made Dharma connections in the past, even if they are not enough to adorn themselves only with practice, should maintain great faith and respect, even if there is only one word or sentence of Dharma connection. Thus it is said. As for taking the vows of aspiration and practice of a Bodhisattva, what is even more excellent than all of the above is the merit spoken of in the Mahayana Dharma. In the "Twenty Vows" it is said: "One should rely on a teacher who abides in the vows and is proficient, and possesses the ability." Or in practice
