1. Title. 1. Title. In Sanskrit: Bodhi Patha Pradeepa. In Tibetan: Byang chub lam gyi dron ma (Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment). Thus it is called. Here, regarding the necessity of writing the title at the beginning and the explanation of the meaning of the title, first: Sharawa said: Geshe Tonpa's intention was that this treatise, from the beginning "in Sanskrit" to the end "complete," is entirely taught by circling around one's own continuum with the practice or actualization from today onwards. Therefore, by the command of the translators, writing the Sanskrit at the beginning is not the creation of all translators. It was written after consulting with the previous kings, ministers, and bodhisattvas, entrusting it to three great necessities: knowing and repaying kindness, having a reliable source, and being necessary for later generations. Among these, the first, the necessity of knowing and repaying kindness is: If one makes good use of human dharma, The path to the realm of gods is not far. From the ladder of humans and gods, If one ascends, liberation is nearby. As it is said, before the holy Dharma was propagated, the entire land of Tibet was no different from animals, not knowing where the previous life came from and where the next life would go, nor knowing from which actions happiness and suffering arise. Regarding the nature of samsara and nirvana, and the cause and effect of the two, all lacked contemplation and were shrouded in the darkness of ignorance. Making good use of human dharma, thereby going to the realm of gods, is the place for accomplishing good rebirths, relying on the ladder of the two, the place for accomplishing liberation, the place for accomplishing omniscience, and the slight arising of the light of wisdom is the kindness of the holy Dharma. This Dharma also came from India, therefore it is necessary to repay the kindness to the Indians, this is its meaning. Moreover, those who came before, even called the Indian beggars Acharya (梵文,Acharya,梵文罗马拟音,Ācārya,轨范师), placed them on the high seat, and like Shang Chenpo and others, gave gold to every Indian who came, and also made vows to do so, all of which was done to repay kindness. Writing the Sanskrit script at the beginning of the treatise is to teach that all of us later generations also need to learn in the same way.

Therefore, in the past, when there was an assembly in Do Kham, many monks gathered together, and an Acharya came and the first thing he asked in the morning was how the rules were to be followed. He himself sat below, and someone said, 'Don't sit here, there are others,' and he got angry. 'We will open the Dharma text, and if there is Indian language at the beginning, I will not sit here, and if there is not, I will sit,' those who say such things are all instructions for us to contemplate, because he is qualified to sit in the front row. The main point of the scripture is explained up to here. What we ourselves need to practice is that whether we encounter our own Dharma because of a cause, or because we encounter it due to being harmed, we must know the kindness. If we do this, all merits and happiness will arise. If there is no gratitude for the benefits brought by the Dharma, merits and happiness will not arise, and even the little that has arisen before will disappear, this is the law. Therefore, for the benefits brought by worldly food and clothing, and the necessary help such as taking care of the sick, we must treat them as if we have not repaid the kindness. If we are grateful for those things, it is better than worldly praise. Just as the saying goes, 'If you give a relative a cup of water, the relative will also curse you,' later on, you will also help him, and all perfections will increase like the waxing moon. Because those are the main fields of merit, the merit will also become immeasurable and so on. In the 'Hundred Verses of Wisdom' and the 'Drum Sound Verses' it is also said: 'Know and repay kindness, the wealth guardian will be close to the person who does not waste kindness.' It is said that wealth is for this life, and the guardian is for the next life. If you do not repay kindness to those, even if there is no displeasure in this life, you will not help him later, and like that shameless person, like a bat, does not know how to look back. It is like there is no difference between smearing with oil and smearing with water. All perfections will also decrease like the waning moon, this is the greatness of dependent origination. Therefore, in the 'Hundred Verses of Wisdom' and the 'Drum Sound Verses' it is also said: 'The ocean and Mount Meru, and the lands are not my burden, the one who does not repay kindness, that is my great burden.' It is said like this. The ocean and so on are not burdens.
