That is, abandoning. Abandoning the cause of losing the mind of enlightenment—abandoning the aversion to sentient beings, as well as abandoning the four black dharmas and studying the four white dharmas as their antidotes. Among these, the order here is slightly different. First, it explains meditating on the benefits: As such, the mind of aspiration, what are the merits of generating it? That is what Maitreya thoroughly explained in the Sutra of Arrayed Tree. It is said that after teaching the preliminary and main ritual, the mind of aspiration that vows on the fruit in this way, as Sharawa said, is not just treating the ritual as a game. Rather, from many lives ago, one has cultivated the nature of the three types of individuals, accumulated immeasurable merits, and thus become a Mahayana lineage person. Here, too, one relies on the noble person, cultivates the mind, and accumulates the collections. At the time of the ritual, one also receives the ritual properly from a virtuous friend who is in accordance with the tradition, then what are the merits or benefits of generating it? That is, in the extremely vast collection of scriptures, the Avatamsaka Sutra, in the sutra section called the Sutra of Arrayed Tree, the content that the Bhagavan Maitreya thoroughly explained to the Bodhisattva Norzang. That is, as Sharawa said: In the Sutra of Arrayed Tree, the liberation teachings of the Bhagavan Maitreya are about two volumes, and that complete content is also the benefit of generating the mind of enlightenment. Among them, about two hundred benefits are determined. Some of them are said to be the benefits of generating the mind of enlightenment in accordance with practice, and others are said to be the benefits of the ultimate Bodhicitta. But for the reason that without it, it does not arise, everything becomes the benefit of the mind of aspiration. Among them, there are two types: self-benefit and other-benefit. And two types: abandoning unfavorable factors and accomplishing qualities, which are summarized into four doors of benefits. Among them, the first benefit of self-benefit is: because it can generate all the Buddha-dharmas of oneself, it is like a seed. Sharawa said: If a seed does not fall into the ground, then no matter what one does, such as plowing, digging, sowing, and irrigating, not even a single green sprout will arise, let alone a fruit? Similarly, the Bodhi-

If the mind of enlightenment, like a seed, has not arisen, then no matter how much one practices the perfections such as plowing and cultivating, or meditates on emptiness, or visualizes a vast deity body, or meditates on the channels, wheels, and bindus, not even a sprout of the path of seeing will arise, let alone attain the fruit of omniscience. The fruits of generosity and so on, which are not grasped by the mind of enlightenment, are merely enjoyment, a basis for good rebirth, a perfect form and retinue, accomplishment of actions, and rebirth as a god in the higher realms. Even if one meditates on emptiness, one will not see it. Even if one sees it in a broad way, it will be inclined towards the Hearers. Now, people think that if there is emptiness, that alone is enough. It seems that great yogis have directly seen emptiness, and that there is no obstruction to any walls. Geshe Tonpa said, "Jowo (referring to Atisha) is inclined towards the Hearers," and made him cultivate loving-kindness and compassion from the root. Putowa said, "If there is no mind of enlightenment, even secret mantra will be inclined towards the path of the Hearers." An old woman was unhappy and asked the monks of the monastery, and the monks said, "Of course, it is so, and one will even fall into the hell realm." Therefore, the deity body, Mahamudra, and so on, are symbols of secret mantra yoga, mother tantra, Yamantaka, and the secret union of the four tantras. If there is no wheel protected by the mind of enlightenment, then no matter which of these one practices, most will be confused and mixed up, and one will not attain accomplishment. Even if one attains accomplishment, it will only be a small common accomplishment, and one will not attain the accomplishment of Mahamudra at all. Second, the benefits of benefiting others: like a field, it makes the white dharma of beings grow. Sharawa said, "The fruit will definitely follow the seed, so the seed is a unique cause, and the field is like a common condition. Like the seed, the unique cause is the arising of the mind of each of the three vehicles, and the common condition is the mind of enlightenment. Because the mind of enlightenment has special characteristics, the sutra says: 'If a Bodhisattva is in the world, the world is in the human realm.' And so on, the Thus Gone One.
