I have gone far beyond all the victors. The Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas are not regarded as refuge because their blessings are small or inferior, as the paths are not the same. For example, going to Vajrasana (Bodh Gaya) is like having a companion who can only go as far as Tölung (present-day Tölung Dechen District, Lhasa), which is of no help. Even if one sets out for India in the beginning, changing one's mind midway will not do, hence it is said to be irreversible. Therefore, to achieve omniscience for the sake of others, it cannot be achieved without relying on the blessings of the Three Jewels. One must rely on them, as Geshe Tonpa said: No matter how famous the efforts of this life are, if there is no corresponding increase, no matter how long one practices, one cannot attain Buddhahood. One attains Buddhahood by relying on the increase of Vipaka and causal affinity. That alone is not enough; one attains Buddhahood by relying on the blessings of the Bodhicitta, even small roots of virtue become vast. That alone is not enough; one attains Buddhahood only by relying on the blessings of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. When the righteous Jowo Chokyang placed the palm of his right hand on the crown of the head of the noble Norzang, in his vision, he went to the presence of all the Buddhas of the ten directions, merely folding his palms before some Buddhas, receiving teachings from some, practicing Brahmacharya before some, and practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva for as many kalpas as there are dust particles in a field before some. It is said that when he raised his hand, he was sitting before him with his palms folded. When asked Pötowa about this, he said that it was the completion of the accumulation of merit, no different from actually doing those things. Therefore, the former is the definitive meaning. Furthermore, one cannot achieve enlightenment without relying on the Buddha who shows the path, the Dharma which is the actual path, and the Sangha who are companions on the path of practice. For this reason, relying on them is called special refuge. Although recognizing them as refuge and gaining faith is from the first bhumi onwards, it is necessary to have faith in the refuge before everything else. Therefore, from a young age, one should meditate on the greatness of the Three Jewels of Refuge. During this time, the lama gives encouragement, generating faith that seems to see them directly, the knees...

Even when sitting or squatting, one should adopt a respectful posture, folding hands in prayer, and take refuge three times. Before taking refuge in this way, one should also manifest love and compassion for all sentient beings, and also manifest the greatness of the Three Jewels. One should regard the virtuous spiritual friend as a Buddha. One should also remember that the continuum of one's own aggregates, which are like dreams and illusions, are given names as a temporary measure. The lama should instruct and guide meditation on these, and also allow for rest in between. The lama bestows these instructions and guides meditation. It is said that only Geshe Tonpa possesses all these complete practices. Yogis and monastic practitioners initially did not have all these practices, but later the Geshes bestowed their kindness. It is said that the Sangpu school was widely influenced by the kindness of Atisha. When Potowa went to consecrate the stupa of Geshe Tonpa, he heard that a group of people were generating bodhicitta, and he was very happy and went to see them, but he only saw them observing fasting vows. Therefore, whoever one takes refuge in, one must protect their teachings. For example, whoever takes refuge in a king must accomplish his tasks and obey his laws. If one does not do so, not only will one not receive his benefits, but one will also be punished for violating them. Or, if one obeys the laws of the king one relies on, one will be considered a subject of the king; if one does not obey the laws, one will not be considered a subject. Similarly, if one takes refuge in the Three Jewels but does not protect their teachings, one will incur faults that contradict them, or one will not be considered a Buddhist, so one must learn their teachings. As Sharawa Chenpo said: The uncommon teachings are like those spoken of in the Abhisamayalankara, which seem to apply only to the meditation on the nature of aspirational bodhicitta. The common teachings have three individual trainings and four general trainings. Protecting all of these, preventing them from hindering the attainment of Buddhahood for the sake of others, will make them uncommon teachings. One should constantly examine and count the precepts of all that one has vowed, such as individual liberation vows, and practice the instructions.
