Therefore, what has been well explained is a brief summary of the characteristics and conduct of the teacher, the expounder. Next, the nature of the listener, the disciple, is that one must listen to the Dharma with qualities. As it says in the "Wish-Fulfilling Jewel Treasury": "When listening in an excellent manner, there are six precious things, such as the perception of jewels; six difficult practices, such as enduring afflictions; six that are not changed by faults, such as much learning and diligence; six things to do specifically, such as generating compassion; six kinds of needs, such as knowing distinctions; and six ways of seeking, such as seeking the Dharma. Listen with thirty-six qualities." First, the six precious aspirations are shown. As it says in the "Sutra Requested by Good Hand": "One should perceive the Dharma-speaking lama as a treasure of jewels; one should perceive the Dharma as a wish-fulfilling jewel; one should perceive listening to the Dharma as extremely rare; one should perceive holding and thinking about the Dharma as precious and meaningful; one should perceive understanding the Dharma individually as not being found in hundreds of lifetimes; one should perceive those who have abandoned seeking the Dharma as abandoning nectar and engaging in poison; and one should rely on the aspiration that listening and thinking will become meaningful." Next, the six difficult practices of endurance are shown, as it says in that text: "In the direction of the virtuous friend and the Dharma, endure the afflictions of heat and cold; endure the afflictions of hunger and thirst; endure the afflictions of harsh words and loud noises; endure the afflictions of tiring work; endure the afflictions of giving and seeking necessities; and even for the sake of one's cherished life, one should endure giving it up, which is very important." The armor of six that are not changed by circumstances is also from that text: "When teaching the Dharma and diligently pursuing the Dharma, one should strive not to be deterred even by a short spear. Hold much learning, know the meaning of the Dharma, be endowed with practicing it, rely on such a person, and attend to such a person with reverence." The six distinctions of what to do specifically are also from that text: "One should know all the roots of virtue, and having known them, practice them properly. Generate great compassion for sentient beings, completely uphold the sacred Dharma, and remember the Three Jewels.

Not interrupting the lineage of mothers, and causing all sentient beings to ripen, one should possess such special conduct. Thus it is said. Accomplishing the six necessities is: As asked in the "Light Protector," the necessity of knowing the distinctions of the Dharma after hearing, the necessity of not doing what should not be done after knowing, the necessity of also teaching others in this way, the necessity of oneself and others attaining liberation by teaching in this way, the necessity of training the wisdom of oneself and others, and the necessity of cutting off the doubts of those who come from the four directions, therefore one should strive in these six hearings. Thus it is said. The six seekings are: In the "Greatly Extensive Great Buddha Avatamsaka Sutra," it is said, without deceit and falsehood, seeking the Dharma from the depths of one's heart, not for oneself, but seeking for the benefit of all beings, not desiring gain and respect, but seeking with the desire to abandon the afflictions of beings, not being biased, but seeking by entering with wisdom, without doubt, but seeking in order to cut off the doubts of all beings, without arrogance and desire, but seeking in order to perfect the Buddha's teachings, therefore one should seek such complete seeking. Thus it is said. When a student possessing such characteristics of a vessel listens to the Dharma, it is taught in the tantra that the six perfections arise, as it is said in the "Wish-Fulfilling Jewel Treasury": Offering flowers, seats, etc., is generosity; perfectly restraining the three doors is the perfection of discipline; enduring harm, joy is diligence; non-distraction, hearing and retaining is precisely meditation; cutting off doubt and imputation is supreme wisdom. Therefore, when listening to the Dharma, arranging the Dharma throne of the lama and decorating it with flowers, etc., is generosity. Restraining one's own body, speech, and mind, and avoiding harming small beings and lice, etc., in that direction is discipline. Enduring heat and cold, etc., is patience. Praying to the lama and rejoicing in listening is diligence. Listening with one-pointedness without distraction is meditation. Cutting off doubts and imputations about the meaning of what is heard, and definitely distinguishing the faults and merits of good and evil, etc., is wisdom. Knowing that all of this is without inherent existence, and that the listener, the Dharma, and the lama all appear but are without inherent existence
