For sentient beings whose minds have not transformed, in order to be rescued from the intense fear of suffering in samsara, recite these words: Namo! I take refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha! I take refuge in the Guru, Yidam, and Khandro! I take refuge in the Dharmakaya, Sambhogakaya, and Nirmanakaya! I take refuge in Essence, Nature, and Compassion! I take refuge in the Dharmakaya of the Guru, Buddha, and Dharma! I take refuge in the Sambhogakaya of the Guru, perfect with enjoyment! I take refuge in the Nirmanakaya of the Guru, full of compassion! I take refuge in the Root Guru, the kind one! I take refuge in the Lineage Gurus, the blessed ones! I take refuge in the Guiding Guru, the compassionate one! I take refuge in the Yidam Mandala deities! I take refuge in the Heroes, Dakinis, and Dharma Protectors! Without distraction and with clarity, strive to recite as much as possible, hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands, or hundreds of thousands of times. The benefits of this are that temporarily, wishes will be fulfilled, one will be included among Buddhist practitioners, and one will become a suitable vessel for qualities. Harm from humans and non-humans will not be able to affect one, and wherever one is born, one will be born in the presence of the Guru and the Three Jewels, ultimately attaining Buddhahood. As stated in the Sutra Pitaka: "Whoever goes for refuge to the Three, will quickly attain Buddhahood." So it is said. In the Vinaya Pitaka, it is said: "The qualities of the Buddha are inconceivable, the sacred Dharma is also inconceivable, the noble Sangha is inconceivable. If one has faith in the inconceivable, the ripening will also be inconceivable, and one will be born in a pure realm." As it is said, the benefits of taking refuge cannot be enumerated even by the tongue of the Buddha. Is there no other refuge besides this? The gods of the world, parents, children, relatives, and the king of the land are not refuges, because they only provide temporary benefits and do not have the compassionate power to ultimately protect. They are worldly beings, like a blind person unable to show the way. The four great gods of the world, such as Indra, Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, are also not ultimate refuges. As it is said: "If one goes for refuge to mountains, rocks, forests, pleasure gardens, trees, and stupas, they are not supreme refuges."

O! By relying on those refuges, one cannot be liberated from the state of samsara, and the torment of suffering cannot be pacified. If one takes refuge in the Three Jewels, one will attain fearlessness, and all happiness will arise. Thus it is said. In the Sutra Requested by the Jewel Girl, it says: When the time of death arrives, no one can be a protector, neither youth nor strength, one can only depart as one wishes. Thus it is said. In the Vinaya it says: When the messengers of Yama, the Lord of Death, arrive, parents are not your protectors, nor are relatives, friends, and family. They will all abandon you, and you will go alone to the next life. Thus it is said. Therefore, the guide who saves us from the terrifying suffering of samsara and leads us to the land of great bliss and liberation is the infallible and ultimate refuge, the Three Jewels. Having taken refuge in this way, one must learn the order of the precepts. So, what is the Dharma of the precepts like? There are three precepts of abstention, three precepts of accomplishment, and three precepts of conducive circumstances, making a total of nine. The first is: Having taken refuge in the Buddha, do not take refuge in worldly deities; having taken refuge in the Dharma, do not harm sentient beings; having taken refuge in the Sangha, do not rely on non-Buddhists. Although there are no real non-Buddhists in Tibet, do not associate with evil friends who slander cause and effect. The second is: Having taken refuge in the Buddha, regard the supports of the Sugata's body, even fragments of tsha-tshas, as the actual Buddha, and respectfully perform prostrations, offerings, reverence, etc. Having taken refuge in the Dharma, regard the supports of the Dharma Jewel, even a single letter, as the Dharma Jewel, and respectfully perform reverence and offerings, etc. Having taken refuge in the Sangha, regard the supports of the Sangha Jewel, from ordained monks to even a monastic robe with a yellow patch, as the actual Sangha, and respectfully perform reverence and offerings, etc. The third is: Always diligently make offerings to the Three Jewels, and even with whatever you eat or drink, offer the first portion, and constantly take refuge, prostrate, etc., without relaxing faith, pure appearances, and devout reverence.
