Therefore, to correctly adopt and abandon without error from this is the supreme method for benefiting in this life and the next. This is also an intermediate verse. Third, taking refuge and generating bodhicitta, of which there are two: taking refuge and generating bodhicitta. The first is: PHAṬ (藏文,梵文天城体,phaṭ,摧伏) YE SHE KA DAG PHYOG YEN KUN ZANG MO (藏文) RANG ZHING RANG NGOR SANG PA KHA CHÖD MO (藏文) THUG JE KUN KHYAB DAL WA KHROD MAI KUR (藏文) KYAB SU CHIO GONG PAR HUB CHUB ROL (藏文) As stated, according to the tradition of the supreme vehicle of Great Perfection, it is said in the Transcendent Transformation: "The initial essence, nature, and compassion, abide in three." The initial basis is essence emptiness, nature luminosity, and compassion all-pervading, possessing the nature of the three wisdoms. Furthermore, in Self-Arisen Awareness it says: "The essence of that sphere is emptiness. Nature is naturally luminous. Compassion abides in the heart of awareness, becoming the source of all qualities." As it is said, the essence of the basis, the sphere, is emptiness, free from all extremes of elaboration, abiding in its own nature, which is essence emptiness. Its nature, the basis abiding spontaneously accomplished body and the nature of wisdom, naturally or intensely luminous and without obstruction, is the wisdom of nature luminosity. Compassion all-pervading is such awareness, inseparable from appearance and emptiness, abiding in its essence, although not outwardly manifest, it is designated from the aspect of becoming the source of all qualities, these are called the three spontaneously accomplished bodies abiding in the basis. In the Precious Treasury of Abiding Reality it says: "Self-awareness, the basis, is like a crystal ball. Its emptiness is the nature of the Dharmakaya. Luminosity is self-radiant Sambhogakaya. The unobstructed manifestation is the Nirmanakaya. In the sphere of the basis, the three bodies are spontaneously accomplished." And in its auto-commentary it says: "Awareness emptiness is like crystal, the Dharmakaya. Its five lights are the clarity of awareness, the Sambhogakaya. Like crystal having the ability to manifest outwardly but not manifesting, the aspect of the unobstructed gate of manifestation is the Nirmanakaya, therefore the basis, the three bodies, are one essence." It is clearly shown with examples, and in the All-Creating it says: "The essence of all Buddhas is the three bodies. My nature, unmade, is accomplished as the Dharmakaya. My essence, unmade, is the perfect Sambhogakaya. My compassion.

It is said, "The three manifestations of the lord of the earth are not shown as the fruit of searching and accomplishing." That is, from the point of view of the basis from which all samsara and nirvana arise, it is shown by the name of the agent. The self-arisen wisdom, the essence of the clear light bodhicitta, the self-manifestation of perfect purity, the teacher of the continuum, is the provisional Vajradhara. The Bodhisattva is the definitive Vajradhara, so considering this, saying "mine" is the place of the Vajra words. To this, the division is made by the three qualities of emptiness of essence, etc. That is, the unconditioned nature, which abides from the beginning in emptiness, and similarly, the unconditioned essence, which is clear, and the manifestation of compassion, are shown in three ways. Moreover, searching, etc., is not the fruit of accomplishing through effort, but it is shown that it abides from the beginning. Therefore, here it is said that nature is empty and essence is clear. According to the general system of treatises, emptiness is indicated by the name of nature and appearance is indicated by the name of essence. In the tantras of Dzogchen, it is commonly said that essence is empty and nature is clear, and these two are not contradictory. The self-commentary of the Abiding Reality Treasury says: "Nature is empty and essence is clear is when distinguishing between the disposition and its essence. Essence emptiness, nature clarity, is also separating the sphere and the essence of the sphere into emptiness. But in reality, emptiness is the Dharmakaya, clarity is the Sambhogakaya, and the way of manifestation is the Nirmanakaya, which are one." As it is said. Essence is to be understood as referring to the qualities of appearance that abide within the sheath of obscuration, not appearing like the qualities of the time of fruition. Therefore, in this case, disposition and sphere are the same meaning, and the qualities that have become the essence inseparable from that sphere are called the qualities of the sphere. Or, the appearance of that sphere is like the essence of its essence. If there is no appearance, then the sphere alone becomes like a husk without essence, so the qualities of the path and the fruit cannot arise. To this, the arising basis appearances, pure and impure, all abide in the nature of the three bodies, and are called the three bodies of the basis appearance, play, and power. As it is said in the Abiding Reality Precious Treasury, "At the time of the basis appearance arising from it, purity is the three bodies, the self-appearance of the victorious ones, and impurity.
