It is not there. The instruction-dependent path is not capable. Again, why are there immeasurables and direct perceptions in the third dhyana, but not liberations, etc.? It is said that, firstly, only because the cause of liberations, etc., is absent, the spheres of overcoming are not present. Because there are no liberations and no limits, and because those arise from entering into them, or because of the manifest attachment to the essence of bliss, one cannot accomplish liberations, etc. The immeasurables, etc., are merely in accordance with its bliss. Furthermore, what are all the liberations, etc., and other dharmas that are attained by these? Whatever is attained as the sphere of exhaustion is definitely all of these. Whatever are the spheres of overcoming are definitely the liberations, but the exhaustions are undoubtedly present. Whatever are the liberations, this and the other are undoubtedly present. If, without instructions, liberations, etc., do not arise in the form and formless realms, why is it said that vast arising occurs in the form and formless realms without instructions? That is because there is no one to point out and explain. It should be understood that this is established as follows: wherever one is born in the form and formless realms, the dhyana above that and the manifestation of the formless are the difference between the formless and the dhyana because they surpass it. "From nearness and repeated habituation," it is said, is because of nearness and repeated habituation. How so? One who is born in the desire realm and attains the samapatti of the formless, then falls away from that and is born in the formless realm. Having been born there and experienced it numerous times, and from the power of the cause of being close, repeatedly habituated, and possessing equal share, the samadhi of the formless arises. Likewise, one who is born in the form realm from cause and effect also causes birth in the formless. Similarly, having completely fallen away from entering the sphere of infinite consciousness, into the sphere of infinite space

Moreover, due to the power of the cause, one can generate the samadhi of the sphere of infinite consciousness. Similarly, it should be said for those born in higher realms as well. 'By the power of karma' refers to extensive arising, because for those born in the form realm, the ripening of karma to experience other times dwells nearby. Therefore, the continuum corresponding to those who are free from desire exists, because those who have not abandoned desire for the lower realms cannot be born in the higher realms. Through the power of cause and the power of karma, formless beings arise in the form and formless realms. It is not by nature, because due to the power of the eon of destruction, one is not born in the formless realms. In the form realm, 'other dhyanas' refers to extensive arising; for those born in the lower dhyana, it means the higher dhyana. In the desire realm, having arisen in the second dhyana and so on, one completely degenerates. One who was born in the first dhyana can generate the second dhyana and so on due to the power of the cause of previous habituation. The arising of dhyanas in the form realm through the power of cause is like that. By the power of karma, when the ripening of karma to experience the first dhyana and so on, or other times of experiencing the second dhyana and so on, dwells nearby, those born in the first dhyana and so on can generate the second dhyana and so on. 'Because the entry of virtuous dharmas is predominant' means that when entering virtuous dharmas, the entry of those paths of virtuous karma, those that have a greater share of it, that is its predominant entry. Its entity is its predominant entry itself, because due to the predominant entry, dhyanas arise in the form realm. It is said thus: 'From obtaining those excellent roots of virtue as their very nature, because the support of the habit of previous dhyana continuously arises, and because it abides in accordance with it, dhyanas arise without instruction.' What is meant by 'nature'? Some Sautrantikas say that those dharmas that have a predominant entry are themselves the previous...
