If those of middling and lower faculties do not know contentment, they should strive to cultivate diligence, and if they have not performed the ritual of stability, it will cause discomfort in the body, and later it will decline. Know that according to the sharpness or dullness of the faculties, the amount of learning, and the three levels of faculties, superior, middling, and inferior, there are gradual and sudden enlightenments, and the differences in manifestation, and it is uncertain what will arise from the three levels of faculties, superior, middling, and inferior. If we consider the case of sudden enlightenment, if one possesses the six dharmas, one will want to focus on the object of meditation. If we consider the first stage of the arising of the mind, if one possesses the seven dharmas, one will want to focus on the object of meditation. If we consider the second stage of the arising of the mind, if one possesses the eight dharmas, one will want to focus on the object of meditation. Therefore, if one knows and possesses the eight dharmas, then the causes for wanting to focus on the object of meditation are complete, and the faults of not wanting to focus on the object of meditation are completely severed. Therefore, wanting to focus on the object of meditation in yoga with signs, one should cultivate yoga without signs. Even in the case of yoga without signs, if one knows and possesses the eight dharmas, one will want to focus on the object of meditation. These eight dharmas are: one must possess the six factors of calm abiding, one must know the nature of phenomena as it is, one must cultivate non-conceptualization, one must cultivate the object of meditation to be very clear, one must not be controlled by excitement and dullness, and one must cultivate moderately. By remembering and cultivating these six causes, one can know the four stages of the arising of the mind as a result. In the third stage, one should not follow the six uncertain situations. Among them, to know the nature of phenomena as it is, is that in conventional truth, it is like an illusion, but in ultimate truth, one must know that it is without self-nature. To cultivate non-conceptualization is that in ultimate truth, all phenomena are free from the eight extremes of elaboration, therefore one should cultivate without grasping onto anything. To cultivate the object of meditation to be very clear, is that when cultivating with signs, one should clearly cultivate the color and shape of the Buddha image, and when cultivating without signs, one should clearly cultivate the characteristic of not grasping onto anything. When cultivating with signs
