A brief summary of the experiences of the mind. A brief summary of the experiences of the mind. A brief summary of the experiences of the mind will be given. There are two types of yoga: yoga with signs and yoga without signs. Among these, focusing on explaining yoga with signs, if one understands and possesses the eight qualities, one will want to focus on the object with signs. These eight qualities are: to possess the six factors of calm abiding; to understand the characteristics of shape and color; to primarily meditate on the general; to remain on the specific until one abides in the specific; to meditate on the object being very clear; not to be influenced by dullness and excitement; to meditate moderately; to keep these six causal factors in mind and, through meditation, to recognize the four stages of the generation of bodhicitta; and during the third stage, not to follow the five types of uncertainty. Among these, to possess the six factors of calm abiding means to dwell in a suitable place; to have few desires; to be content; to abandon many activities; to purify discipline completely; and to abandon desires and other conceptual thoughts. One should understand the six factors of calm abiding and possess them in one's mindstream. To understand the characteristics of shape and color, if one focuses on the body of the Tathagata, then the characteristic of shape is to understand how the distinctions of upper and lower, etc., exist; and the characteristic of color is to understand how the four types of colors exist. One should primarily meditate on the general, and remain on the specific until one abides in the specific, which means that after understanding the characteristics of shape and color, during meditation, one should focus the mind on the general essence of the complete body. When one focuses on the general in this way, if the complete body does not appear, but some specific parts appear, then for as long as they appear, one should focus the mind on that specific part. Therefore, one should primarily meditate on the general, and remain on the specific until one abides in the specific. If it is not like that, but one places the object in front of oneself and always engages in intense meditation, or the actions of the body

Or, like gradually applying the mind to a steep slope, or like not paying attention to certain details, one should know that focusing on the meaning and purpose is the cause of not quickly attaining the object of focus. One should meditate on the object of focus being very clear, mainly when meditating on the general characteristics, and not think of meditating vaguely or dimly. By the power of meditating very clearly on the characteristics of shape and color, what is to be focused on later will become very clear. Therefore, one should meditate on the object of focus being very clear. One should not let sinking and excitement control one. When meditating on the object of focus being very clear, one should not meditate while being controlled by sinking and excitement. Therefore, when sinking, one should uplift, and when excited, one should restrain. One should meditate in moderation. From the perspective of the three types of faculties—superior, middling, and inferior—the superior should meditate for a quarter of the day and a quarter of the night. A quarter of the day is meditating in four or five sessions. A quarter of the night is meditating at dusk and dawn. The middling should meditate only for a quarter of the day, keeping the night calm, and meditating in five or six sessions during the middle quarter of the day. The inferior should meditate only for a fifth or sixth, or about a seventh, of the day, keeping the night calm. The inferior should also understand the three types—superior, middling, and inferior—and then meditate in six or seven sessions during the fifth, sixth, and seventh of the day. If one thinks that the time for meditation is short and the time for non-meditation is long, which will lead to not being able to focus on the object of focus, then even if the time for meditation is short, it will be able to leave an imprint with the power of being very clear. And even if the time for non-meditation is long, as long as one does not engage in other distractions, the previous imprint will not weaken its power. Moreover, due to the short time of meditation, great power arises from the stream of consciousness. Therefore, by the power of meditating very clearly, one will quickly attain the desired object of focus. By keeping these six causal dharmas in mind and meditating, one will understand the four modes of the arising of mind as the result. That is, one should know and possess the six dharmas, which are the dharmas corresponding to the six causes of calm abiding, and through the power of meditation, the four modes of the arising of mind
