And is free from. Because it possesses equanimity, therefore, the fourth state is more in accordance with the aspect of samadhi without distraction. Therefore, in the third state, one should strive and abandon. In the fourth state, one should not lose one's nature and should respect it. Because samadhi is not complete, the experience of the mind will produce four states. If one does not understand that it arises in this way, one will not understand the difference between what to take and what to discard. Therefore, samadhi will not be complete. Because samadhi is not complete, the experience of the mind will produce four states. If one understands that it arises in this way, one will naturally understand the difference between what to take and what to discard. Therefore, samadhi will quickly become complete. Possessing the six causes of calm abiding and abandoning its unfavorable conditions is to abide in a place that is in accordance with the six causes of calm abiding, and so on. After understanding the six causes of calm abiding, one should make them complete in one's own mind stream, and abandon abiding in unfavorable places, and so on. Not possessing the six causes of calm abiding and not abandoning its unfavorable conditions, then the third state, which should be abandoned, will mostly arise, and the fourth state, which should be accepted, will only arise at certain times. Therefore, samadhi will not be complete. Possessing the six causes of calm abiding and abandoning its unfavorable conditions is what should be abandoned. The third state will only arise at certain times, and the fourth state, which should be accepted, will mostly arise. Therefore, samadhi will quickly become complete. Practicing with moderation and not long sessions means that from the three types of faculties, superior, medium, and inferior, the superior person should practice one-third of the day and one-third of the night. One-third of the day should be practiced in three or four sessions. One-third of the night should be practiced in the first and last parts of the night. The medium person should practice one-fourth of the day and one-fourth of the night. One-fourth of the day should be practiced in four or five sessions. One-fourth of the night should be practiced in the first and last parts of the night. The inferior person should practice about one-fourth of the day and night, in the first and last parts of the night, and in the daytime, in four or five sessions.

When the power of meditative absorption arises, one should practice half the day and half the night. Half the day means practicing in three sessions during the day. Half the night means practicing in the first and last parts of the night. Even when not practicing, one should understand all phenomena as illusory, and cultivate compassion, etc., as explained in the stages of practice. Practice sessions should not be too long, but only to the extent that one can manage the amount of practice and it does not harm the body and mind. If one cannot manage the amount of practice and the sessions are too long, then the three situations to be abandoned will mostly occur, and the fourth situation to be accepted will only occur occasionally, so meditative absorption will not be perfected. If one can manage the amount of practice and the sessions are not too long, then the three situations to be abandoned will only occur occasionally, and the fourth situation to be accepted will mostly occur, so meditative absorption will be quickly perfected. One should understand this and exert effort, and meditative absorption will be quickly perfected. Be skilled in understanding the four situations and the distinctions of what to accept and reject. Be skilled in abandoning what is incompatible with the six causes of calm abiding. Be skilled in managing the amount of practice and not practicing for too long. In this way, whoever understands these things is skilled in perfecting meditative absorption. Although I am not a wise person, I have kept the instructions in my heart and expressed my mental experiences. If untrained people develop faith in this, they will attain the excellence of higher meditative states. By the power of the three kinds of wisdom, I have cleansed the defilements of the mind. Even if wise people do not believe in this, the unwise are controlled by their lack of skill, and the minds of the wise cannot be controlled. Since I have written this with a mind unmixed with other benefits, there is no fault. Because I have written this with great joy, may all people understand the meaning of scripture and reason, practice the stages of the path in accordance with the Dharma, and ultimately reach perfection, and may non-conceptual wisdom and compassionate activity arise continuously like a stream! The brief summary of mental experiences is complete. A brief summary of mental experiences is told.
