The arising of tranquility: In the first stage, even if one cultivates intensely, the object to be observed will not appear; even if one cultivates weakly, the object to be observed will not appear. In the second stage, if one cultivates intensely, it will appear at certain times; but at certain times, it will not appear with either intense or weak cultivation. In the third stage, if one cultivates intensely, it will appear; if one cultivates weakly, it will not appear. The fourth stage is different from the third stage, as it appears with both intense and weak cultivation, and can also be achieved in solitary meditation. It is free from two discordant qualities and possesses three harmonious qualities. The two discordant qualities are continuous agitation and excessive dullness. The three harmonious qualities are being in accordance with the feeling of joy and being in accordance with the aspect of tranquility. Furthermore, by cultivating while keeping the six qualities in mind, one should understand that there are four stages in the arising sequence of the mind: In the first stage, it appears with both intense and weak cultivation, but at certain times, it does not appear with either intense or weak cultivation. The second stage is different from the first stage, as the number of times it appears with both intense and weak cultivation is large, and the number of times it does not appear is small. In the third stage, it appears with both intense and weak cultivation, but at certain times, if one cultivates weakly, it will not appear, or in some cases, five uncertain states will appear. The five uncertain states are uncertain shape, uncertain color, only color appearing, uncertain number, and uncertain size. Among these, uncertain shape refers to wanting to see the form of the Tathagata's body, or wanting to see the characteristics of color, but instead seeing something that resembles the shape of a stupa, or seeing something that looks round. Uncertain color refers to wanting to see yellow, but instead seeing white or blue. Only color appearing refers to wanting to see something with both shape and color characteristics, but instead seeing only color without shape. Uncertain number refers to wanting to see only one object to be observed, but instead seeing five or six. Uncertain size refers to wanting to see a large object to be observed, but instead seeing a small one, or wanting to see a small object, but instead seeing a large one.

Oh! Because the meaning of permanence does not appear, but the meaning of impermanence appears, it is called uncertain. The fourth stage is more excellent than the third stage, because it appears in both diligent and lazy states, and can also be done in a short time. It is separated from two incompatible dharmas and possesses three compatible dharmas. In the third stage, one should follow the five uncertain situations, because at any time, neither diligent nor lazy states appear, and it cannot be done in a short time. Because it sometimes appears and sometimes does not, even if one follows, it will not be dull. Therefore, if one diligently cultivates the previously set object and makes the cultivation reach an appropriate level, one can quickly achieve the goal. Therefore, at that time, one should not follow the five uncertain situations. In the fourth stage, even if the five uncertain situations appear, because it has the characteristic of wanting to focus on the goal, there is no fault even if one follows. Later, it will also appear as one wants. Alternatively, if one keeps the six dharmas in mind and cultivates, the order of the arising of the mind will not occur, but will appear clearly all at once. Within the first session or six or seven days, the characteristics of shape and color will appear clearly all at once, so that one wants to focus on the goal. Or, it appears in a not too long time, disappears after two or three days, and then the characteristics of shape and color appear clearly all at once, so that one wants to focus on the goal. For gradual or sudden goals, the characteristic of wanting to focus on the goal is that if one has four dharmas, one can focus on the goal. The four dharmas are: it appears in both diligent and lazy states, it can be done in a short time, it is separated from two incompatible dharmas, and it possesses three compatible dharmas. The clarity of wanting to focus on the goal should be known to have three types: superior, medium, and inferior. Superior is clearer than what the eyes see, thus giving rise to pride; medium is as clear as what the eyes see, thus giving rise to pride; inferior is clear in the mind. After understanding all three types of superior, medium, and inferior, when one wants to focus on the goal, one should be content with whatever appears, and then perform the ritual of reliance, which will not cause physical discomfort, and will not regress later. After understanding all three types of superior, medium, and inferior
