From then on, beings will be born in the great hells. Even if they are fortunate enough to be reborn as humans in one out of a hundred cases, they will become dark and reddish, fierce and harbor strong intentions to harm others. Due to that cause, that condition, and that basis, beings will be reborn in the hells, which is called great hatred. So, what is medium hatred? It is when one becomes hateful and engages in sinful, unwholesome actions, then quickly, rapidly, again and again regrets it, and relies on its antidote. This is called medium hatred. So, what is small hatred? It is when one becomes hateful and merely utters some words, merely utters some unpleasant words, merely utters some harsh words, and so on, engaging in unwholesome actions. Some of them may even faint. Even if it happens, they rely on the antidote at that very moment, in that very place, at that very time. This is called small hatred. So, what is ignorance? Ignorance should also be understood as threefold: great, medium, and small. So, what is great ignorance? It is when one is happy even with those faults mentioned earlier, does not feel sadness, does not utter laments, and does not feel regret. This is called great ignorance. So, what is medium ignorance? It is when one regrets again and again even after engaging in unwholesome actions, and confesses without concealing before those who practice pure conduct, and does not regard it as merit. This is called medium ignorance. So, what is small ignorance? It is when one transgresses non-self-natured faults and prescribed faults, transgressing two or three paths of learning practice. This is called small ignorance. Furthermore, Bodhisattvas are skilled at turning the mind away from external objects. Like this, for those who are skilled at taming their minds, there is no joy in desired objects, no desire for desired objects, and no strong attachment to desired objects. Why is that? Because they are skilled at taming their minds. If they act in a place that has not been taught, they will maintain mindfulness and strive, and be diligent in observation. So, how does one act in a place that has not been taught? It is when the mind neither wanders outward nor inward.

It does not turn. It does not practice virtue. It does not practice non-virtue. It does not practice higher seeing. It does not hold still, and dwells overwhelmed by sleep and languor. This is like, for example, when a man awakens from a drowsy sleep, his mind is not clear because it is not obscured by sleep, so at that time the mind runs unclearly. To this, the Bodhisattva is skilled in truly praising the mind, truly rejoicing, and truly abiding. Thus, the Bodhisattva is skilled in the mind. He is thus skilled in the mind, these dharmas are like illusions. These dharmas are like dreams. These dharmas are virtuous. These dharmas are non-virtuous. These dharmas are arising. These dharmas are non-arising. Thus, he completely distinguishes all dharmas. He thinks thus: All these dharmas abide in the mind, arise from the mind, and are preceded by the mind. If the mind is extremely subdued, extremely gentle, and extremely comprehended, then all those dharmas will also be extremely subdued, extremely gentle, and extremely comprehended. Thus it is said. In the Noble Sutra on the Establishment of Mindfulness, it is also said: Listening to noisy talk, drawing pictures, harmonizing musical instruments, the assembly of stars, thinking about the stars, acquiring food and claiming it as one's own, accumulating wealth like a Rakshasa woman, thinking, relying on the king, not accepting the teachings of the wise, inviting comfort as a guest, dwelling in a haunted place. Thus it is said. In the Intermediate Stages of Meditation, it is also said: What is the gathering of tranquility? Abiding in a suitable place, having few desires, being content, completely abandoning many activities, having pure morality, and abandoning discriminations such as desire. Among these, possessing five qualities is a suitable place. Because there are no unruly beings or enemies, it is well-endowed. Because clothing and food are easily obtained without difficulty, it is easy to obtain. Because it is a place with few diseases, the land is good. Because friends have pure morality and share the same views, they are good companions. It is not crowded with many people during the day, and the sound is small at night.
