Where is the recollection gathered, by which the mind of Śamatha enters through the nine mental abidings, the six powers, and the four mental engagements? What are the nine mental abidings? They are: causing the mind to abide only within; causing the mind to abide correctly; gathering and causing to abide; closely abiding; taming; pacifying; closely pacifying; making one-pointed; and making Samādhi. How does one cause the mind to abide? It is when one has truly gathered from all external objects, and in order to prevent distraction, one first causes the mind to approach inwardly, that is what is meant by causing the mind to abide. How does one cause the mind to abide correctly? It is when the mind that has initially approached becomes agitated, coarse, does not abide correctly, and does not abide completely, then by the manner of causing the mind to abide on that very object, and by the manner of what should be done, with manifest cessation, one does not let it scatter and does not let it be manifestly distracted, that is what is meant by causing the mind to abide correctly. How does one gather and cause to abide? It is when one has thus placed the mind and correctly placed it, if it becomes distracted outwardly due to forgetfulness, then one again gathers it back to that very object. Thus, that is what is meant by gathering and causing to abide. How does one closely abide? It is when one first closely establishes mindfulness in such a way, and when the mind abides and causes the mind to abide correctly, one does not let Śamatha and its mind go outward, thus that is what is meant by closely abiding. How does one tame? It is when the mind becomes distracted by forms, sounds, smells, tastes, tangible objects, and signs of desire, hatred, ignorance, men, and women, then one first takes hold of the perception of faults, and by the power of that, one does not let the mind scatter on those signs, thus that is what is meant by taming. How does one pacify? It is in relation to the discriminations such as the discriminations of desire, and the close

If any afflictions completely disturb his mind, then from the very beginning, he regards those afflictions as faults, thereby not allowing those conceptual thoughts and near-afflictions to invade his mind. In this way, he can become peaceful. How can he become nearly peaceful? If, due to his forgetfulness, both conceptual thoughts and near-afflictions arise completely, he does not accept any that arise, and abandons them. In this way, he can become nearly peaceful. How can he make it continuous? By means of intentional effort, he continuously and uninterruptedly abides in the continuum of meditative stabilization. In this way, he can make it continuous. How can it become meditative stabilization? Through constant practice and familiarity, through repeated practice, to the point where he can naturally enter, obtain the path of naturally entering, and without intentional effort. Through this naturalness, his mind can enter the uninterrupted continuum of meditative stabilization. In this way, it can become meditative stabilization. What are the six powers? The power of listening, the power of thinking, the power of mindfulness, the power of awareness, the power of diligence, and the power of familiarity. These six powers can accomplish the nine stages of abiding of the mind. Among them, the power of listening and the power of thinking, temporarily through the power of listening and thinking, first merely cause the mind to abide on the object of focus, and in the manner of focusing on it, truly abide. The power of mindfulness, after the mind has been so focused, can truly recollect and not allow it to be distracted, thereby being able to recollect and abide, nearly abide. The power of awareness, after that, does not allow the continuum of conceptual thoughts and near-afflictions to invade, thereby being able to subdue and pacify. The power of diligence does not accept those two, and continuously abides in the continuum of meditative stabilization, thereby being able to pacify and make it continuous.

Through the power of complete familiarity, one enters into samadhi. What are the four types of attention (yid la byed pa)? They are: attention with effort, attention with interruption, attention without interruption, and attention without effort. These nine states of mind are entered into through these four types of attention. Among them, settling and rightly settling are entered into through attention with effort. Gathering and settling, closely settling, taming, pacifying, and closely pacifying are entered into through attention with interruption. Making it a single stream is entered into through attention without interruption. Entering into samadhi is entered into through attention without effort. In this path of meditation, In all cases, among the nine states of mind, entering into samadhi, among the six powers, the power of complete familiarity, and among the four types of attention, attention without effort is mostly entered into. This is the ultimate distinction of right samadhi. These eightfold noble paths, in summary, are actions to be done during movement and actions to be done during dwelling. Among them, right speech, right action, and right livelihood are actions to be done during movement. Actions to be done during dwelling are of two types: quiescence (zhi gnas) and insight (lhag mthong). Among them, whatever is the discrimination and effort of right view is insight. Whatever is right mindfulness and samadhi is quiescence. Thus, relying on the complete purification of right speech, right action, and right livelihood, one cultivates quiescence and insight from time to time. This is the manifestation of abandoning all attachments, and one will also attain the supreme fruit of Arhatship. Therefore, these eight are the limbs of the noble path. Among them, when all five aggregates that transcend the world are gathered by the path, why is the eightfold noble path, which manifests right view, called the truth of the path? Noble learner
