It exists. Regarding things that did not exist before, some believe that the impermanence of a vase already existed beforehand, only to be eliminated upon encountering something like hail. Similarly, all fruits merely refrain from performing the function of a fruit; they exist as the essence of a fruit during the causal stage. Regarding things that cease to exist, permanence exists as the essence of the cause at all times. For example, a lump of clay exists in a vase and does not abandon the nature of the cause. Regarding situations where one thing does not exist in another, a horse also possesses the nature of a cow, and the generality of a cow exists everywhere, with the belief that everything of all things is pervaded by everything. Regarding things that are completely non-existent, such as a rabbit's horn, because there is no cause, it is not that it lacks the nature of a horn, except that it does not appear to perform the function of being hard and sharp. The belief is that existence that can be pointed out is existence itself. If one merely makes those with wrong views understand it as non-existence, then it is considered a classification of four types of negation of non-existence. If these four types of non-existence themselves are taken as objects and, through them, a meaning is shown, then it is shown that it will become a non-affirming negation. Therefore, if by the absence of a rabbit's horn, non-existence is established, then it is considered a 'non-affirming negation,' that is, one word establishes multiple meanings. And so on, it is said. If one merely establishes that a rabbit does not have horns, then it will become a negation of non-existence. If it shows and establishes the nature of hornlessness, then that is establishing meaning with one word from within the non-affirming negation. This is the explanation of what did not exist before and what ceased to exist. The explanation of negation is: 'There is no fruit in the cause,' and 'There is no cause in the fruit.' If cause and effect establish things, it should also be understood in the same way. It is said, for example, that saying there is no sprout in the seed, and saying there is no seed in the sprout, in this way, meaning is established with one word of non-affirming negation. The explanation of how it becomes a non-affirming negation in the context of one thing not existing in another is: 'There is no cow in the horse,' establishing the horse itself, which is considered a 'non-affirming negation.' This is like the previous one.

It should be established in this way. Having explained that with one word, one can establish the negation of non-existence from the four categories of non-existence, now, in order to show understanding through meaning, it is said: Whatever is negated, contradicts something else, and whatever necessarily establishes something, that is negation understood through meaning. Here too, the four non-existences themselves are taken as the object. What does this mean? Its meaning is this: If Devadatta is not dead and is not at home, then it is understood through meaning that he is elsewhere, like that. Because Devadatta's being dead and being at home are negated, if his being elsewhere is not established, it contradicts something else, because it is not allowed, so it is necessarily established that he is elsewhere, like that. Next, the way of establishing that does not express itself in its own words is explained: What is indicated by negating other names, without contradiction or necessity, is what does not express itself in its own words. What is said means: What is indicated by negating other names is real, for example, by negating the name "not Devadatta," what is indicated is the offering. For the offering, negating Devadatta does not contradict anything else, nor is it necessary to grasp the offering. Showing the essence in this way is called not expressing itself in its own words. Summarizing these contents: Whatever is established in this way, the real and non-existent things, establishes that unique nature, which is called non-existence negation. These contents have been analyzed before. Non-existent things are different from this. What is said means that establishing with those four ways of establishing, different from that, is the meaning of directly establishing that thing. Now, wanting to explain that the negation of non-existence is also shown as the four non-existences, and that the negation of non-existence also explains many categories, and to classify these separately. Distinguishing from the perspective of characteristics, this is the distinction of non-existence negation, while non-existent things have only one characteristic. It is said like this. Distinguishing from the perspective of characteristics is to show the nature of the Dharma itself, so it is the distinction of non-existence negation. And the negation of non-existence, because it is shown as non-existence, there is no difference in the characteristics of categories on non-existence. Therefore, it is said that from the perspective of the four characteristics, there are four. What is said means that wherever the characteristic of non-existence exists, that is the basis of the characteristic, and it distinguishes non-existence.
