Past things are not characterized by the negation of substance, because it is shown that they are form, etc., which are encompassed by time, just as they arise in the present. The Blessed One said: Monks, if a past form did not exist, then a noble disciple who possesses hearing would not fail to observe the past form, but because the past form exists, therefore a noble disciple who possesses hearing does not observe the past form, and so on, extensively. Similarly, whatever form is slightly past and future, etc., all gathered together, becomes the number called the aggregate of form, and so on. What is encompassed by time? Those are encompassed by time, namely form, etc. The word "etc." includes feeling, etc. The nature of those is form, etc. Here too, the word "etc." includes suffering, origin, impermanence, and selflessness, etc., showing that it is close to being shown itself. Furthermore, if it is constantly abiding like space, then how are past, etc., established? Therefore, it is said to be called time difference, etc. Because obtaining action is called the present, the destruction of action is the past, and not obtaining action is the future, therefore time is established from the perspective of action. Moreover, what is this action referring to? If, for example, because the eye sees, the ear hears, the nose smells, the tongue tastes, etc., the seeing, etc., of the five senses, such as the eye, etc., are the knowers themselves in order to make them discernible. Form, etc., are also actions of the characteristic of seeing, etc., just as they are the objects of the senses. In this way, if the name is the same as what arises now, in the case of the two being contradictory, because there is no action, it will not become what arises now. If the characteristic of action is to produce and hold fruit, for example, the phenomena that arise together with the arising of the eye, etc., are the fruit produced by the agent, and the eye sense that arises later is the fruit produced by the agent, the lord's fruit, and the fruit of similar cause.

It is the nature of being a fruit. This is because it emits in order to produce the fruit, and it holds because it exists in the object of the cause, so it is said that the eye is produced in the present. If so, then the past and future of the co-equal, pervasive, and ripening causes will also become present occurrences because they promise to produce fruit, which would be a fault. If it is thought that the function of the characteristic of producing and holding the fruit exists in all, then even the past, such as the co-equal cause, will become the present, and thus be feared. Master Samghabhadra said: The power of projecting the fruit is said to be the action of the dharmas, but not the production of the fruit. The past, such as the co-equal cause, does not have the projection of the fruit, because it has already been projected in the present state. It is not reasonable to project what has already been projected, because it would be an endless fault. Therefore, since there is no possibility of action for the past, the characteristic will not be confused. They answer with "these" and so on, and it must be admitted whether the action is different from or not different from the dharma. Because difference and non-difference are characteristics that exist in mutual exclusion, negating one, if the other cannot be established, there is no other opportunity for things. If the action is different from the dharma, then the previous and subsequent states of such an occurrence will become devoid of self-nature, just as "because it is a cause and conditioned" etc. is the reason, and is the example. The word "etc." includes the thing itself, etc. If it is not so, if the previous and subsequent become devoid of self-nature, then because self-nature exists at all times, all conditioned things will become permanent. Because there is no characteristic of permanence other than existing at all times. As it is said: Whose nature is indestructible, the wise call it permanent. This is what is said. If it is thought in this way, then how should the reasons for permanence, power, causality, and conditionedness be established?
