How do you nihilists think? It is said, "With the wisdom of examination," etc. To act with the wisdom of examination, either having abandoned it or being in the process of doing it, is merely to connect with the agent of non-existence, meaning to obtain a connection. What is called "that which will not arise" does not exist at all. However, what is called "non-existence arises" is merely a nominal designation, that is the final word. Furthermore, what is the seed of examination for those who desire such a designation? It is said, "After one, there is an object," etc. One, that is, immediately after a certain object that is distinctly determined, an object not previously seen is perceived. It was not present prior to that intermediate state, because it was not perceived, since it has become the characteristic of being perceived. Therefore, this examination, "what did not exist before arises," is the seed. Why? It is said, "What existed before," etc. If it existed before the intermediate state just as it is in the intermediate state, that is, if it possessed the nature of an object, then this reason for examination, "non-existence arises," would not exist. Thus, what is called "arising" refers only to the determined nature that occurs in the intermediate state. If it already existed before, then at that time, the very nature of the act of arising in the intermediate state would be lost, because it exists everywhere like the sky, without prior, subsequent, or intermediate states. Therefore, the designation "everything arises everywhere" would occur, because there is no distinction. Furthermore, in order to refute other schools that claim the effect exists, it is said, "Milk, etc., becomes yogurt, etc." What do you think is meant by what you say, "The effect exists in the cause"? Is it by way of the nature of manifestation, or by way of the nature of potentiality? If it is by way of the nature of manifestation, then at the time of milk, etc., yogurt, etc., would also be perceived as they are later. If it is by way of the nature of potentiality, then what is that nature of potentiality? Has it become the characteristic of being perceived?

So, is the nature of results such as yogurt different from the cause? Or is it the same? If it is the same, then at that time, it would be a fault of being pointed out as before. If it is said to be a different aspect, then at that time, the statement that the result exists in the nature of the cause would be abandoned, because it is admitted that there is another thing called the power different from the result. Like this, the clear difference in the nature of having qualities such as taste, ability, and maturity is called the result such as yogurt. Moreover, since it cannot be pointed out in the state of milk, etc., it is the object of the expression of non-existence. Furthermore, that which exists in the nature of ability is not the result itself. If there is another, then the existence of the other is also not, because it would become too extreme. If it is said that ghee is life, and the water of edema is foot disease, haven't you seen that when another exists, it is spoken of as another? The answer is, because it is said "how truly," truly, meaning unattached. The result is attached to the cause, so it is said that ghee is life, but it is not truly so. If you also attach and say that the result exists in the cause, then at that time there is no contradiction at all, but if it truly exists, then it is said to be a contradiction. In order to show this in a metaphorical way, it is said "having courage and suffering" etc. You have not placed the nature of courage in suffering and ignorance, because they are mutually different in characteristics. Now, in order to show that the reason "because seeing the differences all follow" is not established, it is said "having clear courage etc." The clarity of the characteristics of sound etc., in us, that is, in us here, does not exist in the nature of happiness etc., because happiness etc. are internal, are the nature of awareness. Sound etc. are also mindless things, therefore, how can these have happiness etc.? The combination is, those that are not the nature of awareness, those are not of happiness etc.
