It is certain that inferring external objects based on the power of seeing arisen things is meaningful. Direct perception, if there is no object being seen, will not arise because it is not preceded by grasping, therefore it is not decisive. Direct perception cannot engage with what is not grasped, so it is grasping itself that engages. Even if the ultimate object of grasping is false, the object of grasping is still the object of direct perception. Grasping also has an object of negation, and negation is also different due to the distinction of the limits of negation. Therefore, all that is contained by the negation of one thing cannot be made the object of one conceptual thought. For this very reason, the sound of direct perception is not grasping at the sound itself, nor is it grasping at the moment of the sound. If this is the case, then conceptual thought will inevitably possess one negation, but there is no certainty about other negations. Since grasping at one negation is inevitably done, conceptual thought is the agent of grasping at one negation, and direct perception is also the agent of conceptual thought. Therefore, the function of valid cognition (pramāṇa) is the ultimate result of grasping at one negation. If this is the case, then what is called "permanent" is the negation of "impermanent," and what is called "existent" is the negation of "not performing a function," so it is not an object of one function of valid cognition. Therefore, the existence of different objects of valid cognition, established by direct perception, is itself taken as the reason. Whether the permanent, which has become the object of another function of valid cognition, is reasonable or unreasonable is something to be examined. Others who are not skilled in the function of valid cognition argue by taking the permanent and the existent as objects of the same valid cognition, so this needs to be refuted. If someone says that this harms the moment of direct perception of recognition, that also needs to be examined. Here, whatever is grasped by the grasping that arises from the power of direct perception, with the thought, "I have grasped this thing," that itself is said to be the object grasped by direct perception. If someone does not recognize that this thing has been grasped, then it is not considered to be grasped by direct perception; if it were, it would be too far-reaching.
