The Establishment of Momentariness The Supreme Dharma. The Establishment of Momentariness. The Supreme Dharma. In Tibetan: The Establishment of Momentariness. Homage to youthful Manjushri! Some realize that all conditioned phenomena are momentary. Regarding this, if because there is a moment in this, the object related to the moment must be said to be momentary, then the meaning to be expressed by the term 'moment' cannot be established by the opponents. If their tenet is that what depends on destruction as soon as it is born is momentary, then the meaning of being born is that it necessarily exists, and it exists at the time of aggregation. Therefore, no examples are appropriate for proving something related to destruction as soon as it is born. In order to show the valid cognition that thoroughly establishes pervasion, the example of the place must necessarily be close to the application that proves it. If intelligence and flames, etc., are taken as examples, since there is doubt that they only exist for a moment, it is not possible to show the valid cognition that proves the pervasion with the obvious reason that is desired. If the reason is put forward that 'it has the nature of doing what is to be done,' it is difficult to prove the pervasion of momentariness itself, since it can also apply to what is not momentary. In this way, even if an object is not momentary, but because it depends on the proximate cause that acts simultaneously, it has the ability to gradually produce results, if someone thinks that there is nothing to prevent this, and therefore it should not depend on other factors, then this idea is unreasonable. Because, even if it does not need to depend on the action that distinguishes the object to be destroyed, hammers, etc., can prevent it by being close, and even when they are close, they do not make any distinction to the object to be prevented. From following and reversing, realizing that it is the cause of destruction, the action of the object that prevents cannot be denied. Again, for example, just as seeds, etc., do not establish the aggregation of sprouts, etc., in the absence of complete non-existence, but the nature of the cause that is recognized through the way of following existence and non-existence cannot be denied, similarly, hammers, etc., also prevent.

It is so. Just as things like hammers, although not established by the combination and difference of nearby objects, the destruction of things like pots depends on the nearby objects that can destroy them, so too, non-momentary things also engage in their own affairs from nearby co-existent things that are not capable of establishing differences. Therefore, the statement that whatever exists is momentary is like an uncertain reason, because it causes doubt about turning away from contradictory categories, even for all those who hold to eternalist views. Furthermore, this reason can also be established as unestablished. That is, if the existence of things that are extremely established by direct perception is taken as the reason, if one only grasps how it is established, then the existence of all things as objects is extremely established as non-momentary. Such a thing is contradictory to the establishment of momentariness, and therefore, because it is powerless, it should not be posited. If one posits existence, then it is unestablished because no valid cognition has established it. If one posits how it is established, then if one grasps the existence of the nature of non-momentariness, then that is contradictory to momentariness, as previously stated. Similarly, if the momentariness associated with the collection of seen objects is what should be established, then it contradicts direct perception. In this way, the arising of such an appearance, which follows the function of the senses, gathers into a collection of apparent clarity, and is a cognition that grasps an undifferentiated nature, called a cow, contradicts those who speak of momentariness. Because it follows the presence and absence of the senses, these cognitions, which are no different from those arising from other senses, should not be accepted as non-direct perception. Similarly, because the external object is of a nature that depends on its proximity, it cannot be considered meaningless. How is it? Just as the consciousnesses of the eye, etc., which follow the appearance produced only by the blue color, etc., that is present, grasp an object that does not exist, if there is clarity that is not dependent, then these discriminations that follow the arising and undifferentiated appearance of that, are also an undifferentiated combination of clarity.
