Yes, the object apprehended by inference is also without substance, and since the substance is not apprehended, how can it be obtained? Therefore, since it is not an activity in name, and since there is no subsequent action at the time of momentary attainment, the attainment of the uncertainly apprehended object is not direct perception. Since it is not a substance, inference is also not the obtainer of the apprehended object. Whatever definitely determines the object, time, and aspect, that which is capable in name becomes the object of entry and is capable of being obtained. The apprehended object of direct perception is determined in the cause of a single moment's part of the substance, and since it is the nature of countless moments of continuity, it is capable of being obtained because it subsequently acts at the time of attainment. Inference is also the same; if the apprehended object is non-substantial, even so, because it is superimposed from what is not its own nature, it is superimposed on the external object itself, so it will definitely determine the external object, and since it is the object of entry, it is capable of being obtained. Therefore, valid cognition is not the obtainer of the apprehended object, but rather the obtainer of certainty. Therefore, what reveals is attachment, not apprehension. As it is said: "The objects of apprehension are different, and the differences in meaning are explained, but the objects of the activity of valid cognition are not different." And it is said: "Attachment, which becomes a branch of attainment, is the activity of valid cognition, not apprehension." And it is said: "Having definitely grasped that the attainment of what is attached is valid cognition, that which has the object of substance is valid cognition itself." And it is also said: "Having completely cut off the meaning of these two." What is completely cut off is attachment, not the apprehended object. "In thought, there is no deception, even if it is mistaken, it is valid cognition." What is said in this way, thought is what is to be manifestly desired, that is, it refers to attachment itself. Even so, the attainment of what is attached is not deceptive. Because attachment itself is the activity of valid cognition, therefore this must be inevitable. Whatever makes knowledge valid cognition by its action is inevitable, and that inevitable thing is also called the result.

Do. Therefore, valid cognition is that which has the result of adherence. What is said as valid cognition having the result of certainty, certainty means determination, that is, adherence. Here, adherence refers to the limb of attainment. It is also said to have the result of entering. Since it becomes a limb of entering, the adherence of the limb of attainment is valid cognition, that is the meaning. Because it is the cause of entering, it is the adherence of the limb of attainment itself, therefore, valid cognition is that which has an object that is not understood. If understanding and attainment were different, then for whatever object is understood, another consciousness would also be the attainer, therefore, an object that has already been understood would also become valid cognition. Because adherence itself is the attainer, therefore, whatever object is understood, that object itself causes one to enter and attain meaning, therefore, for a second or third person, since there is no prior attainer, it is not valid cognition. If the adherence of the limb of attainment is the function of valid cognition, then direct perception would not become valid cognition, because for direct perception, there is no function of valid cognition. If it is thought that the arising of conceptual thought in the form of establishment and refutation from direct perception is its function, then valid cognition would become different from the function, and that is also unreasonable. Moreover, the function itself is the result, and if that is the case, then saying that the result is different would become an unwanted complete acceptance. If that is the case, then saying the word direct perception is too small, because inference would also not become valid cognition. Because the function of valid cognition is said to be the adherence that has become the limb of attainment, and inference does not remain beyond a moment, when the adherence that has become its nature ceases, how could inference have the adherence of the limb of attainment? If another conceptual thought arises from inference, then by whom will it be attained? If that is the case, then would the collection of inference, etc., that is immediately after attainment, become valid cognition? Or would only the conceptual thought immediately after attainment become valid cognition, while inference would
