Examination of Pramāṇa. Dharmottara. Examination of Pramāṇa. Dharmottara. In Sanskrit: Pramāṇaparīkṣā. In Tibetan: Examination of Pramāṇa. Homage to the All-Knowing One! Whose greatness is not known, The great state of pacifying the stream of suffering, Having shown well, causes the assembly of seekers to attain, To that which has become Pramāṇa, I prostrate. Pramāṇa is knowledge that does not deceive. That which does not deceive is the good demonstration of obtaining an object capable of accomplishing a purpose. That which causes to obtain is that which causes to enter by showing the object of entry. Therefore, the function of Pramāṇa is the good demonstration of that which has become a limb by means of that which causes to obtain. Manifestation is the direct perception that is particularly attached to what is seen, which is the good demonstration of the object. That which is not seen, the ascertainment by means of an unmistaken sign, is the demonstration by inference. If asked: What is called Pramāṇa? Answer: That by which one measures is Pramāṇa. Thus, all Pramāṇas should be known. If asked: That by which one apprehends an object, is that Pramāṇa? Then, should that which apprehends an object be examined in detail due to partiality, or is it established by being near to what is needed? In this regard, for the time being, that which apprehends an object is not suitable for the purpose of one with conceptual thought seeking a purpose, because it does not accomplish the purpose. If asked: It is the means of accomplishing the purpose. Answer: Then, is the moment of grasping unattainable, or is it that the continuum of what is clung to should be attained? If it is the latter, then it is the clinging to the object of the continuum that is attained, not the apprehension. Therefore, in this way, that inference which has conceptual thought is also that which causes to attain. If that is the case, then is the realization of being able to accomplish a purpose Pramāṇa? Is not realization also not needed for the purpose of seeking a purpose, because it does not accomplish the purpose? If asked: It is the means of obtaining the ability to accomplish a purpose. Answer: If that is the case, then that which obtains the ability to accomplish a purpose should be sought by one with realization, therefore it should be examined in detail in the treatise, not the realization of being able to accomplish a purpose. Because of the sign of being able to accomplish a purpose.

Even if knowledge already exists, the pursuit for the purpose of seeking knowledge is not completely perfect, however, it is when the nature of knowledge is able to achieve the goal that it is sought after. Because, even if enlightenment can be attained, knowledge is not for the sake of pursuit by virtue of the nature of enlightenment, but rather for the attainment of the goal. Therefore, that which does not deceive in being able to achieve the goal is the valid means of cognition (pramana), not when the goal is realized. Shouldn't one also follow the meaning of words? If it is said that non-deception itself is the valid means of cognition, then is the meaning of words abandoned? It is not abandoned, because non-deception itself is said to be achieved through obtaining complete instruction, and it is also said to be the complete instruction of the object of entry. It will be explained in this way. Even so, whatever is measured by knowledge, since obtaining it is the valid means of cognition, it becomes the measuring valid means of cognition that becomes a part of obtaining it, but not the only one. For example, the reason for the use of the word "potter" is the characteristic of the potter's caste, similarly, the reason for the use of the word "pramana" is also the measurer of the part of obtaining it. For the measurer that becomes a part of obtaining it, one should also look to the non-deceptive knowledge. Therefore, "Pramana is non-deceptive knowledge." And, "Because thought is without deception, Even illusion is pramana." When the meaning of these two is completely determined and entered into, it will not deceive the object to be achieved. In the Hetubindu (Drop of Reasoning) it is also said that from conceptual thought, one enters with greater attachment to it, and when entering, since conceptual thought manifestly exists and is non-different, the object itself that precedes entry is said to be the valid means of cognition. Since it is a synonym for non-deception, the very word "pramana" obtains the meaning of obtaining the goal through complete instruction. Even so, the statement "pramana is that which has an unapprehended object" should be specifically qualified as not apprehending its own characteristic. This statement also means that when the very word "pramana" obtains non-deception, it apprehends its own characteristic.
