Even if a horn is a sign, seeing the horn etc., since other visible parts cannot be inferred, it is not a sign. The similarity to be examined is that which is made by other things, for example, the made by the made, like sound and a pot. Relying on what will it be possible to infer things with similarity? Or rather, impermanence itself is made, relying on what will it become an example of similarity? Actually, it is other things that are said to be the reason. Therefore, since doubt arises about the made and the similarity, what should be done? The similarity made by things themselves etc. is not examined through confusion, nor is it through transforming the difference of what is to be produced itself into similarity. If two non-sentient consciousnesses become similarities made by dharma, then, for that, dharma itself is the reason of valid cognition and non-valid cognition, not similarity. If it is known that it will become characterized by the differences of object, time, and manifestation, because it is visible, this is a thing, because it has been seen before, so if the existence of the thing is established, then knowledge is also established as valid cognition. If it is said like this, then, for the nature of manifestation, what can be inferred? Therefore, there is no inference for this. Therefore, if through direct perception and non-perception, cause and effect are seen in the same thing, because all other things are visible that should be grasped by the non-different attachment, it is not to be inferred, but to be remembered, this is certain. Therefore, if the producer itself is seen in the same thing like this, then in another thing it is to be remembered, not to be inferred, because for the causes, the effect is confusing. For that very reason, it is said that the effect cannot be inferred from the collection. Even if there is memory, it is abandoned, and it is said to be a sign relying on other meanings. If similarity is a sign, then, because even one is similar, therefore, this too, after being completely examined, grasping the end of the examination, it will become inferring the object, and sometimes an effect will arise from this. The object of the effect sometimes is also determined only on the collection, not on one thing. Effect.

It is also uncertain there, but the object of valid cognition is definite. Therefore, the arising consciousness is hidden, and what arises is memory, not inference. It is also said that in the vision of those who see, it is from the memory arising from the power of experience. The memory is that when the rememberer enters after determining the meaning with these, the manifest only sees things, and the subsequent thought is only cause and effect. In all of that, it is not the case that only the manifest and the subsequent thought enter the realm of the manifest. What is said like that is abandoned. Why? Because the manifest itself can lead to the fruit of things, therefore the one who enters is the manifest itself. Thus, the plow and the sword, and the anvil and so on that appear manifestly, are like this because the seeds of memory made by the previous manifest are awakened. The knowledge of plowing, cutting, and digging is the same. Therefore, the one who enters is not the manifest. Also, what is said about the knowledge arising from seeing similar dharmas, the meaning of that is this: the cause of merely the arising of things is the valid cognition of the Buddhas, and the cause of merely the grasping of things is the valid cognition of the worldly heretics. Therefore, the arising of things and the grasping of things are both valid cognition and mutually pervasive and pervading. Therefore, the example and similar dharma made by the pervasive, from which the dharma to be established is established in the same way, is determined as valid cognition. The similar dharma made by the non-perception of the pervasive, because of establishing it in this way, is the meaning of not being valid cognition, and similar dharma is not the reason. When doubt arises about valid cognition, does the fault of entering into it and relying on each other not arise? Having entered, because the work to be done is obtained, because it is determined by valid cognition, because of entering, is it not relying on each other? Why? Although there is doubt about valid cognition, seeking the nature of appearance in meaning, entering from the valid cognition with appearance, therefore it is not relying on each other.

There is no fault. Because from a doubt about an object, a conceptualized aspect arises, how can it turn back from doubting the object? Therefore, everything is without reproach. Some are direct perception, some are inference; the valid cognition established by the teacher, established by sequentially following the words, whatever merit I have gained, may it make the teacher who tames afflictions, liberation, the path to liberation, the ultimate valid cognition, the eye of wisdom that benefits all beings, may I possess the supreme Dharma. The "Examination of Valid Cognition" composed by the teacher Dharmottara is completed. Translated by the translator, the monk Lodön Sherab. Examination of Valid Cognition. Dharmottara.
