It is not something with parts or something that is not momentary, because this appearance does not appear as a single gross entity. If it were gross, it would contradict being one. Similarly, something that is not momentary cannot last for a long time. This is because the moment of seeing cannot see; how can seeing that lasts for a long time and has no prior or later parts see? Even if it is allowed that it is not the moment of seeing, the act of seeing is still without prior or later parts, because after seeing in the first moment, it is not possible to see later. Even if that were the case, the prior and later parts of the nature of the object of arising and the act of arising are not objects, so the nature of staying for a long time is not the object of the act of seeing. Therefore, whatever appears is common to what is not momentary. Therefore, what is not momentary is not seen, but certainty arises only from the cause of confusion, just as seeing something that contradicts one also clings to it as one. If the obtainer is not a valid cognition, then will what is not the obtainer not become a valid cognition? Is abandoning the valid cognition of the obtainer not obtaining? Because obtaining is a distinction of later knowledge, how can it become the nature of prior knowledge? Valid cognition is nothing other than the nature of ability. Therefore, the obtainer is also a valid cognition that can obtain, but not obtaining itself. The ability to obtain also arises because it is not meaningless. That which does not arise if it is meaningless also exists for what does not obtain, therefore it is a valid cognition. If that is the case, what is the object of the valid cognition that obtains meaning, the cause of ability, and does not arise if it is meaningless? It is direct perception. Because the nature of direct perception determines meaning and clearly experiences meaning, it is certain that it does not arise if it is meaningless, so it is the determiner. Also, when there is doubt about meaning, there will also be doubt about oneself, so it is thought to be from another. Doubt does not harm direct perception, as has been said before. Valid cognition, direct
