Sound becomes the basis of the word "pramāṇa" ( प्रमाण ,pramāṇa, प्रमाण ), which is the nature of obtaining things that have a function. If it is said that it is related to the thing to be done, then in order to obtain the thing that can accomplish the meaning, it is the obtainer. If this is the case, then wouldn't the distinction between valid and invalid cognition cease to exist? Because there is no situation where one does not obtain anything from engaging with certain cognitions. Because when the cognition of water tends towards a mirage, and the cognition of hair-like appearances tends towards the appearing fine particles, it is not the case that even the mirage and the appearing thing cannot be obtained. Therefore, if in this way all cognitions become the reason for obtaining the thing to be done, then would they all become valid cognitions? It is said in reply: Obtaining refers to obtaining the meaning that is unfailing in accomplishing that thing. In the world, obtaining the thing as it was previously understood is called unfailing, not merely obtaining. Thus, obtaining the thing in the way it is shown is called unfailing. Cognition is also considered unfailing when it obtains the thing in the way it is shown. Therefore, any cognition that is capable of accomplishing a purpose, and which, through obtaining the object of knowledge, relies on the act of knowing, having the object of the known thing, is unfailing in obtaining that purpose. Unfailing is not only the grasping of things that is renowned in the world, but also the grasping of the meaning of the word "pramāṇa" as unfailing. Thus, the unfailing person who indicates the thing to be obtained is called "pramāṇa." In the world, the word "pramāṇa" is based on that which, when speech completely dispels delusion about things, becomes an unfailing dispeller of delusion, for that which completely dispels delusion, becoming an unfailing dispeller of delusion. Therefore, the unfailing knowledge that measures things, as the measurer itself, is established from the worldly ones themselves. Generally speaking, sound that relies on the distinction of fame is visible, for example, the word "potter" is said to apply to one who engages in making pots, just as it relies on the distinction of caste. Similarly, the "pramāṇa" that is said to be the measurer
