Examination of Pramāṇa. Chöchok. Examination of Pramāṇa. Chöchok. In Indian language: Pramāṇaparīkṣā. In Tibetan language: Examination of Pramāṇa. First chapter. Homage to the All-Knowing! That which is not an ordinary eye, nor is it consciousness, is distinct from its nature. Those with consciousness and delusion do not attain it, the exhaustion of various sufferings. Whoever has clearly shown all beings, and has accomplished attainment by seeking meaning. To the Sugata who speaks of valid cognition, having paid homage, I will explain valid cognition. The darkness of the wandering mind of individuals. Dispelling and abiding in the three realms. The light of speech that illuminates all things. Well established, like the sun of Dharmakīrti. It is said that valid cognition is what accomplishes the attainment of a definite object of engagement. Attainment is the precursor to engagement, and the basis of engagement is knowledge. Because it mainly shows the object, it is the determiner and the agent of engagement. Therefore, the difference of determination, the real determination is that, and that can also be attained. Because the reason for accomplishing the purpose of an individual is valid cognition, from the treatises of logicians, the excellent distinctions of its nature, such as perception, and its definition, are subsequently contemplated. The term "pramāṇa" (valid cognition) is not applied to the distinctions of knowledge such as perception, merely by wishing without relying on a reason. Why? Because it prevents others, the non-Buddhists, from examining valid cognition and saying, "This is not valid cognition." If something is to be expressed by the term "pramāṇa" without a reason, then how can knowledge not become valid cognition? It is reasonable to say, "This is valid cognition, but it is not the cause of accomplishing the purpose." Thus, whatever abides in conceptual consciousness can be expressed by the word of a name, like a pot and so on. The knowledge that others manifestly intend is also the same. If what is arranged by conceptualization is not to be expressed, then nothing will become expressible. It is precisely by being able to be related to explicit expression that it pervades the object of conceptualization, but it is not present in what is to be expressed. The cause of relating to a name is

Therefore, if it exists, it does not become unspeakable. Thus, from the unspeakable, if the permissibility of relating to speech is removed, then the very nature of abiding in conceptual thought will also be removed. In this way, that which prevents other speakable things is indeed with reason. For example, if the mistaken sound of a cow applied to a horse is prevented, it is like its relation. But is the reliance on reason dependent on the function of specific explanation? Or does it become the reason for obtaining the desired fruit of speech when relying on the time of speech? Among them, relying on specific explanation is the understanding of the speakable agent in the established sound of the means of valid cognition that establishes the agent. That itself is also understood as speakable by the grammarians. Why? Because it is the very nature of the worldly. Since other meanings of specific explanation are unreasonable, therefore the sound of valid cognition is the reason for the object of the measurer and the agent. In this respect, since all knowledge is understood as the nature of the measurer and the agent, it becomes valid cognition, so the distinction between valid cognition and non-valid cognition will not be established. Why? Because the term that is applied to something only by the cause of something is the one that applies to it if it exists. For example, the term 'vase' is applied to a lump of clay only by the reason of the ability to establish a result with a specific shape. Similarly, the term 'valid cognition' is applied to knowledge only by the reason of the object of the measurer. If it exists but is not applied, then the term with a cause pervades dependence on other causes. However, since the very nature of having other causes is not the reason for that alone, since the reason contradicts the reason for that alone, by seeing the contradiction, the reason is removed from the side that does not agree, so it is called related to what is to be established, which is the nature of the reason of the fallacy of being too extensive. Since the term 'valid cognition' is not applied to all knowledge, therefore, what exists but is not applied, for that reason, the term that does not apply even if something else exists is not the reason for that alone.
