How are the relationships such as Khenpo and disciple explained through the means of embracing? The statement "There is no true relationship whatsoever" means that there is actually nothing in terms of relationship. Although those things are not mixed, they are made to be mixed by discernment. In reality, things are mixed by discernment itself. Furthermore, the statement "Showing some characteristics as if they were dependent on others" means that discernment grasps some characteristics and shows things as if they were dependent on others. By means of giving sustenance and acting according to the teachings, the relationship between king and subjects is perceived as a lord-servant relationship. The indivisibility of the whole and its parts, and the reason for establishing the whole, such as the branches of a tree, are perceived as the relationship between parts and the possessor of parts. Depending on that, that arises, and following that kind, such as the sprout of a seed, is used to show the relationship between cause and effect. By means of manifesting wisdom and following its conduct, the relationship between Khenpo and disciple is shown as the fundamental characteristic of diligent discipline. Therefore, things are related by discernment itself, but there is no real mixing. Thus, for the time being, the relationship of things like lord and servant is refuted. Wanting to refute the relationship between action and agent, the explanation of "that" is discernment. In the verses, "also of that" appears, where the word "also" indicates the meaning of "too." Here, it should be called "of this." "The person who follows" means the sentient being who follows discernment, which is the meaning of the agent. "The words of action and agent," the explanation of this is the words of action and the words of agent. Some are words of action, such as "sewing" and "reading." Some are words of agent, for example, "Devadatta sews pottery, butter, rice wine." "Speakers establish," the explanation of this is "this is expressing action, this is expressing agent," thus establishing the meaning of words.

Sounds such as 'cooking' are terms applied to actions. Sounds such as 'Devadatta' are terms applied to agents. Why are names given? Why are terms applied? It is to understand the distinctness of things. The explanation of this is that, as stated below, the distinctness of things is the exclusion of others. This is to understand it. At the time of understanding, how does it become an understanding that excludes others? The sounds of the words 'action' and 'agent' are used as terms. At the time of terms, words are established. For example, how is it that Devadatta alone is the agent and not others? To exclude other agents, the words 'Devadatta' are combined. Similarly, to exclude the actions of grass and leaves, the sound 'by wood' is established. To exclude the very basis of copper and pottery, 'pottery' is combined. To exclude the work of vegetables and beans, 'rice' is combined. To exclude the act of arranging a feast, the sound 'cooking' is established. Similarly, other things should also be stated appropriately. The relationship between action and agent is not truly existent, meaning that the relationship between action and agent is not existent in the ultimate sense. For example, actions and agents are also dependent on others, etc. If a relationship of self-nature were established, if it were established, then it would have already been refuted in the manner described above. The relationship between what is to be established and what establishes it, or the relationship between accomplishment and what accomplishes it, is also the relationship between cause and effect. The nature of cause and effect will also be refuted below, so what is the relationship of the nature of action and agent? If the relationship of the nature of cause and effect is established, then, this is to say that if the opponent says that although the relationships mentioned earlier are not established, the relationship of the nature of cause and effect exists. That is not possible, this is a word of negation. For example, the things of cause and effect are also, the explanation of this is how is the relationship established? The explanation of this is that it is not established.

That is so. If asked, how does it happen that a relationship does not hold? The answer is, 'residing in two,' meaning residing in two bases. Why is that? Because merely stating the proposition does not establish the meaning, so the reason is questioned. 'Those two' refers to cause and effect. 'Because they do not coexist' means they are not together. To demonstrate that they are not together, it is like this: when the cause exists, the effect does not exist, because it has not yet arisen. When the effect exists, the cause does not exist, because it has ceased. It is not possible for cause and effect to exist at the same time, meaning that it is not possible for the entities of cause and effect to exist at the same time. If the opponent says, 'Non-momentary cause and effect can exist together, therefore there can be a relationship,' then, because non-momentary things also do not exist, the entities of cause and effect cannot exist together, so it is not reasonable to say that. Because non-momentary things lack the ability to function sequentially and simultaneously, like a rabbit's horn, they do not exist, so how could they have the entities of cause and effect? And how could they exist together? Therefore, it is not valid to say that. So, by what means could a relationship residing in two be established? Because the two that have a relationship do not actually exist together. Therefore, it is not possible for the two that have a relationship to exist together anywhere. If it were possible, then the relationship of its basis would also be possible. 'Because it does not reside in two' refers to things. 'How does it relate?' means how is the nature of the relationship or the essence of the relationship established? 'It is not' indicates negation. This is how it is shown here: a relationship must reside in two, and if it does not reside in two, it cannot be a relationship. That is to say, if the cause exists,
