Although it has been promised, one should not consider these two as having a combination in order to generate a combination. Why is that? Because merely promising does not see the desired meaning being achieved, so the reason is questioned. In order for actions, etc., to be accomplished as having a combination, this statement is explained by the following words. If one concedes that it is with combination for the sake of generating combination, then that is the remainder of the sentence. At that time, action will also become with combination, because action will also become with combination. Why is that? Therefore, for example, it is said that combination is desired by what is born from the action of someone and what is born from the action of both. A tree and a magpie are born from the action of someone. Two fighting sheep are born from the action of both, which is admitting combination. And so on, which means that combination will also become with combination, that sentence summarizes. Why is that? Because it is also said that it is considered to be born from combination. Because combination is also admitted to be born from combination. It is not with combination for the sake of generating combination, so what is it? If it is said to be for establishing, then even so, it is said that if the opponent says that it is not said to be with combination for the sake of generating, but it is admitted to be with combination for the sake of establishing combination. Here, those who hold the established tenets say that it is not permissible, that statement is a refutation. Making it abide is also very terrible. The explanation of this statement is that placing and establishing, both are what is to be produced and what produces, therefore there is no other existence, it has already been elaborated in the Commentary on Valid Cognition, which means that making it abide, there is no other making abide except from the very production of what is to be abided. For example, is existence different or not different from the object to be placed? For the time being, it is not different. For example, the existence of what is to be placed, such a connection is unreasonable. If one makes it not different, then the establisher is made into the very thing to be placed.

As such, these are extensively elaborated in the Pramāṇavārttika. Furthermore, to other debaters, it is said: If there is the thought of conjunction etc. without conjunction etc., then, if it is admitted that there is the thought of conjunction etc. without conjunction etc., then what is the nature of separation, that is also the nature of possession, because the two related things, whatever is the nature of existing separately, that itself is also the state of possession, therefore, why would the thought of possession not arise even in the state of separation? Similarly, whatever is the nature of possession, that itself is also the nature of separation, that is to say, why would the thought of separation not arise even in the state of possession? Whatever does not exist, that also exists, therefore, whatever is the nature of not existing on the basis, that itself is also existing, therefore, why would the thought of existing not arise even in the state of not existing? Thus, it is not that there is no thought of possession for separation, and there is no thought of separation for possession, and there is no thought of non-existence for non-existence, and there is no thought of moving for not moving, therefore, the action of conjunction and separation is the cause of the thought of conjunction etc., if it is said like that, that is easy to understand. The thought of other debaters is like this: If the cause of these thoughts is substance, then, substance is always of one nature, why does the thought of conjunction etc. not arise at all times? Here, those who assert established tenets say that is not permissible, because the question is the same. To explain that, if your nature is also the same question, then why would conjunction etc. not arise from separation etc.? That is to say, the two related things, in whatever way they are the nature of possession, similarly, the way of separation is also like that, then, in the state of separation, why do you not admit that there is the arising of conjunction? Similarly, why do you not accept that there is the arising of separation in the state of possession? Similarly, existence etc. should also be said like that. Because there is no action that produces it, if it is said that conjunction is not separation, then, if other
