Is it not the very knowledge of the nature of action? If it is only a characteristic of the sign, then, if it is said to be the nature of another, although it is so, yet by the power of knowledge, this dharma changes into this. It is not by itself, for example, when knowledge makes it an object, then it becomes its dharma. Otherwise, it is not; whatever is the dharma of something, that only arises from its own causes, and not later. Here, the opponent says: Then there is no need to mention 'certainty,' etc. If knowledge itself is not considered to be another nature, then, alas! There is no need to say what is said as 'certainty' in the scriptures. The proponent says: It is not that it is not necessary to say, etc. That is done only for the sake of others. In order to show that very benefit of others, it is said, 'By seeing and not seeing,' etc. Those who think that the reason can be known by seeing in the similar side and not seeing in the dissimilar side, in order to make them know that seeing and not seeing is not the power of the reason, therefore 'certainty' is mentioned. Like this, even though there is seeing and not seeing, it is seen that it is not just that one can understand the reason. Because even the wrong knowledge is its son. For example, for 'it is blue,' etc., there is seeing in the similar side, and for 'it is not blue,' there is not seeing in the dissimilar side, but just by that, one cannot understand the reason. Therefore, in order to understand the meaning that 'the reason is known by being present in the similar side and absent in the dissimilar side,' one should understand that it is necessary to mention 'certainty' when stating the definition. Like this, for the similar side and the dissimilar side, the reason is known by the certainty of being present and absent, but not just by rough seeing and not seeing. In order to understand this meaning, it is said that 'the word of certainty is added.' In order to conclude the main text, it is said, 'Therefore, it is not the definition of another nature,' because of this reason, one can understand others.

Moreover, whatever is, such as knowing the nature of other things, is not the characteristic of a sign. Why? Because it has been said that it describes the difference in the nature of the sign, etc. Because the nature of knowing, etc., does not show any difference in the nature of the sign. If the opponent thinks that the reason is understood through existence and non-existence in similar and dissimilar classes, then why is "certainty" mentioned? Therefore, it is said, "Those that exist and do not exist are," etc. Although some think that the reason is understood through existence and non-existence, however, those that exist and do not exist should only be understood by the valid means that establish them; otherwise, it is not. Why? Because it is said, "Because there is no other way," etc. Like this, for establishing existence and non-existence, there is no other way except for the valid means that establish them. Therefore, in order to clarify these two, thinking that it is necessary to grasp the certainty of existence and non-existence, "certainty" is mentioned in the definition. Is it not the case that merely mentioning existence and non-existence eliminates "certainty"? If not, then would these two not merely be established as existence? Therefore, it is said, "Even by merely mentioning existence and non-existence," etc. Merely mentioning things and non-things can eliminate the entry of valid means that strongly establish things and non-things, but "certainty" is still mentioned. Why? If not, then "Establishing the knowable as existent is," etc. If they do not eliminate the valid means that establish them, then these two, things and non-things, cannot be strongly established as existent. Why cannot they be strongly established? It is said, "Establishing the knowable as existent is," etc. Because establishing the knowable as existent is the cause of having knowledge of existence, therefore, for all things, establishing them as existence itself should be understood as leading to the strong establishment of existence. Like this, whatever establishes "This is blue, this is yellow," etc., that is due to it being apprehended.
