Therefore, it is said, "By completely severing its self-nature," and so on. Because the very nature of emptiness, devoid of the nature of all directions, is completely severed, therefore, the other nature of that direction is negated. This direction, devoid of a pot, is also not the nature of other things, nor does it establish the non-existence of all other things in that direction without distinction. If it is said, does the direction sever the self-nature that is different from it? Therefore, it is said, "In order to know that it necessarily appears as its self-nature." Because the aspects of the directions are experienced separately as distinct and definite forms, therefore, it severs the other self-nature of it. Very well, even if it is allowed that it is merely the appearance of a direction, why does it sever the self-nature that is different from it? Therefore, it is said, "Its self-nature is not the self-nature that is different from it." The self-nature of that direction, that is, its essence, is not the essence of things that are different from it. If the other self-nature is still not severed, what fault would there be? Therefore, it is said, "If the other self-nature is not severed." If the nature of the direction does not sever the other self-nature, then at that time, entering and returning will not exist. Thus, when the nature of the direction does not negate the own nature of other things, then those who seek other things will neither stay nor leave, so all the preceding situations should be stated. Thus, after directly showing the severance of other self-natures, in order to show the function of the mind in severing other self-natures, it is said, "In place, time, essence, and state," and so on. The mind is certain in place, and certain in the distinctions of time, essence, and state, such as blue things, etc. If the mind completely determines the distinctions of place, time, essence, and state as their own distinct self-natures, then it will negate other things that are contrary to the appearing things. Combining the words "place, time, essence, and state" separately...

That which is determined among them is called "suchness." "By its own nature" means the nature determined in places and so on. "Its non-thatness" means that the nature of that is thatness, and the non-thatness of the nature determined separately in places and so on is the nature of other places and so on. It is said that whatever other nature, such as blue, is determined by place, time, nature, and state, is severed. And why is non-thatness severed? Therefore, it is said, "If other things have been severed," and so on. If other places, times, natures, and states have been prevented, then this blue, which is determined by such places and so on, is also completely severed by that mind, and the thatness of the characteristics determined by such places and so on is only thatness, and not otherness, as it is established. Thus, the mind that has changed into other things, such as the places mentioned before, and the nature of separation, and prevents it, is said to completely sever things determined by place, time, nature, and state, such as form. Therefore, direct perception, which is the only thing that enters the measure, is the only thing that divides all things into two aggregates. The two aggregates are: one, whatever is completely manifest; and two, everything else except that, is established as non-manifest. It is said that it divides all things into manifest and non-manifest. Here it is manifest, and except for that, here it is non-manifest. Is it not the case that this function of distinguishing is absent for direct perception without distinction? Therefore, it is said, "It is following and reversing," and so on. Direct perception is the cause of the distinction between existence and negation, and only for this reason does it have a result. The mind of following is the distinction of existence. The mind of reversing is the distinction of negation. It is said that direct perception makes the thing present in front of it conform only to its own nature.
