DTG189 0002.A Detailed Explanation of the Drop of Reasoning..g2.0f

Therefore, this is the reason of the result. These two reasons are seemingly contradictory reasons to prove permanence. Why are these two contradictory? Because it has been said that these two, on the conforming side, in terms of permanence, the two of being made and arising immediately after being made, can be determined to be non-existent. On the non-conforming side, it can be determined that only impermanence exists. This is established in a reversed way. Even if these two are established, why are these two contradictory? It is said that, that is precisely the permanence to be proven, but it proves impermanence in a reversed way. Therefore, because it proves what is to be proven in a reversed way, they are contradictory. If it is because it establishes what is to be proven in a reversed way, then these themselves are contradictory. For the subsequent inference for the sake of others, what is said is what is to be proven, what is not said is not, and what is placed is what is not said. Therefore, in order to show that what harms the intention is different from these two, it is said that what harms the intention that is not expressed in words, because it is established in a reversed way, isn't there also a third contradiction? Two are said to be established in a reversed way, and this is the third. An example of harming the intention is, for example. Eyes and so on are the subject. The meaning for others is, for the one who needs it, what is good and close is the meaning for others, which is to be proven. Because it is assembled. Because it is accumulated, this is the reason. Eyes and so on are the nature of accumulated dust, therefore it is said to be the nature of assembly. Bedding and cushions and so on, whatever those are, those are bedding and cushions and so on. Those themselves are limbs, because they are limbs of human enjoyment. This is an example of showing pervasiveness. Here, what is pervasive is, doing things for the benefit of others. Like this, bedding and cushions and so on are the nature of assembly, because they are the enjoyers of humans and are beneficial, therefore it is said to be doing things for the benefit of others. How does this harm the intention? That is not assembly, but benefiting others.

It is considered to be just like that. Because it is to establish it in a reversed way, it is said to be contradictory. It is said, "Considering other objects that are not desired, it is considered that other non-aggregates are functioning, therefore it is considered that other non-aggregates are functioning." The opponent Samkhya, considers that other non-aggregates are functioning. That which is reversed is to say that other aggregates are functioning, and to establish that, it is contradictory. When the Samkhyas say that there is a self, the Buddhists ask, "Why is that?" They answer, "In order to establish the self, we speak of valid cognition. Therefore, the eyes, etc., are to be established as benefiting the non-aggregate self." This reason is pervaded by reversal. Like this, whatever benefits something, that is what produces it. What is to be produced also aggregates simultaneously or gradually. Therefore, the eyes, etc., benefiting others, it is established as benefiting other aggregates. The teacher Dignāga also pointed out this contradiction, (he said:) "Like you who make the Commentary on Valid Cognition, why didn't you say it?" The other party replied, "Because the reversed establishment of what is to be established is included in these two alone." If it is not the reversed establishment of what is said, then how is it included in the two reversed establishments of what is said? It is said, "That," the meaning of "that" is "because of what," because the harm to what is desired is through the way of establishing the reversed establishment of what is to be established, therefore there is no difference from these two reasons. It is said that even if it is a reversed establishment, or not, how do these two establish the reversed establishment of what is to be established, just like it is here as well, therefore what is the use of saying reversed establishment? Therefore it is included in these two alone. It is said, isn't it just establishing what is to be established? Then how is it not distinguished by the way of establishing the reversed establishment of what is to be established? It is said, "What is desired," because of what? To establish both what is desired and what is said.

From the perspective of the action itself, there is no difference whatsoever between them. Therefore, it is concluded that these two are combined. Just like this, what the refuter wants to know is the current situation. Even if it is the current situation, whether it is stating an opinion or wanting to argue, it should be taken as the goal, and not just stating, so there is no difference. If neither way is established, then it is already contradictory. Among these two, if one is not established, and doubt arises about the other, then it is also uncertain. What is this like? "Whoever is without desire is without desire," this is the first point to be argued. "Is omniscient," this is the second point to be argued. "Because of saying" is the reason. For this point, the opposite of "not established" is mentioned. Because seeing oneself as having desire and not being omniscient, being the same as the inconsistent side, the opposite is not established. Why is there doubt about the concomitance? Because the omniscient and desireless who are in accordance with the consistent side are because of the kalpa, that is, because they are beyond the scope of the senses. Words and so on can be understood by the consciousness of the senses, but for the omniscient and desireless who are beyond the scope of the senses, there is doubt as to whether these words and so on exist. Therefore, because of saying, is it omniscient? Or is it not? Because there is no manifestation, it is uncertain. Now, if doubt arises about both, then in order to explain the uncertainty, it is said: Because doubt arises about the very way of concomitance and opposition, it is the cause of duality. For example, "The existence combined with self is the existence combined with self," this is what is to be argued. The body is the subject. "Living" is the difference of the subject, because it is not believed that the dead have a self. Life is the flow of breath and so on. And so on refers to opening the eyes and smiling and so on, the attributes of living beings are life and so on. Whoever has these is the living being with life and so on.
