The very act of perception by conceptual thought, that which reveals what has been made manifest by that subsequent thought, is perception. Therefore, knowing what has not been seen is what is indicated by perception. Inference also reveals the object of entering into certainty from seeing the sign. Thus, perception also certainly reveals the meaning of what appears, and inference also certainly reveals what is related to the sign. Therefore, these two reveal the meaning of certainty, and if it is certain, it is valid cognition. Other consciousness is not, for revealing what can be attained is what attains. If valid cognition also comes from what attains, then the meaning revealed by consciousness other than the two valid cognitions is extremely inverted, like water in a mirage. And because it does not exist, it cannot be encountered. Some are like the meaning of doubt, doubt is uncertain about things and non-things according to their meaning. There is also no one who possesses both the meaning of things and non-things, so one similar to it cannot be encountered. All that is revealed by conceptual thought entering without a sign, without certainly seeing, is only uncertain about things and non-things, and that also cannot be attained. Therefore, because it cannot be encountered, is extremely inverted, and reveals the uncertain meaning of non-things, other consciousness is not valid cognition. Those who seek meaning should also seek the consciousness that can accomplish meaning and obtain the reason. What is sought by that should also be examined from the scriptures. Therefore, revealing the object that can accomplish meaning is correct consciousness. Whatever is well revealed by that is what can be attained by that. That which attains is the attainment of meaning, and knowing is the nature of the attainment of meaning, thus it is said to be finished. In that, the object is different, the time is different, and the aspect is different, it is another object from what is well revealed, thus, another object comes from possessing contradictory qualities. The object, time, and aspect are also different, possessing contradictory qualities.

Because grasping an object with other characteristics is a valid cognition for an object with other characteristics, just like grasping a white conch as yellow. Grasping an object with other characteristics is not a valid cognition for an object with other characteristics. Grasping something as existing in another place is also not a valid cognition for something existing in another place, just as the consciousness that grasps the light of a jewel existing in the gap of a door as a jewel is not a valid cognition for a jewel existing deep in a house. Grasping something with another time is not a valid cognition for something with another time. Just as the dream consciousness that grasps midnight as the nature of noon is not a valid cognition for the nature of midnight. If it is said that a definite place and a definite characteristic can be encountered, then is it not the case that for a completely definite time, one cannot encounter that time itself? The answer is, it is not said that one must encounter that completely definite time, because the time of seeing and the time of encountering are different. However, at any time, one should encounter the completely definite object itself, because there is no difference and it appears to be grasped, so for something that continuously enters, it should be regarded as one. Whatever consciousness goes before, that is called "that," for example, relative to the result, the cause is earlier, so it is called "prior." If the word "cause" is mentioned, it will be known that it is the real cause for accomplishing human affairs. And the word "prior" only refers to "earlier." Correct consciousness is of two kinds: appearing to be able to function and being able to enter into what is able to function. Among these, what is able to enter into that is what needs to be examined here, and that is only prior, not the cause of the object, because if there is correct consciousness, one will recall what was seen before. From recollection arises desire. From desire arises entry. After entering, one will encounter, therefore it is not the cause of direct perception. Appearing to be able to function is the cause of encountering direct perception, but that is not what needs to be examined, because what those with conceptual thought seek is those with conceptual thought...
