If not, if that is not established, then the other cannot be excluded. Therefore, if permanence is excluded, then impermanence can be established. If both are excluded, then impermanence itself will also be negated, so establishment and negation are contradictory for one impermanent thing. If so, then now the non-perception of the unseen is not a valid cognition, because everything is harmed by other things. Just as it should be heard, the establishment of negation merely by non-perception may harm other things such as smoke. Why? Because it has been said "having characteristics," if merely by non-perception something with the characteristic of negation is harmed, then only its characteristic will be refuted, so all its characteristics cannot be trusted, and it will be suspected of not being a valid cognition. If someone says that it is also the case in the object of inference, that is nonsense. The so-called "seeing contradiction" refers to seeing by direct perception and inference that it arises from one thing, for example, "because it is sound, it is permanent" is like the nature of sound, contradicting the inference of "because it is made." As previously stated, it refers to the three characteristics of "non-arising if absent." The so-called "impossible" refers to being harmed by other valid cognitions. If contradiction is impossible for the three characteristics, then the teacher Dignāga's statement of "non-deceptive contradiction" becomes meaningless, because contradiction is impossible for the three characteristics. The so-called "non-deceptive contradiction" refers to existing only in what does not deceive one's own thesis. For the object of inference, the teacher did not say, so it is only thought that the three reasons are impossible. Then what did the teacher say? This object will be explained in the third chapter. If merely by seeing, one negates the touch that is neither cold nor warm arising from unseen things such as earth, that is also unreasonable. What the teacher said is that negation can be established merely through non-perception, without relying on connection. Seeing also exists in non-perceptual things such as earth, so this negation itself is reasonable, why is it said to be unreasonable?

Therefore, it is said, "Because it is established as non-existent by non-observation," and therefore it becomes something that should be refuted. If appearance exists, it is something that can appear. Its object is the object of appearance, which is a phenomenon directly perceived by the one who realizes it. So how is it? The Vaisheshika school generally considers earth and so on, like this, the warm touch is the quality of fire, the cold is of water, and that which is neither cold nor warm is of wind. Like this, for all that appears and does not appear, such as water and fire, there is no abandonment of touch, because there is no observation, thus speaking of refutation. If so, is this refutation by non-observation not reasonable? It is also said, "That also," and it is said, "Even if it exists," that is, the earth itself, even if it exists. The touches are different, the softness and lightness, etc., are visible as different, because the thickness of the earth is not the same. This touch, which is neither cold nor warm, may be suspected to exist in some contradictory difference such as width. Those who are in that realm see it that way, just as they see the sour and astringent Emblica fruit, but do not see the sweetness. Like that, just not seeing the transformation into sweetness, just seeing the Emblica fruit, it cannot be established that the Emblica fruit is only sour and astringent, why? Because if there is a difference in the cause, then there will be a difference in its resulting qualities, etc. Here also, because the Emblica fruit and sourness itself are not related, it is thought that even without sourness, the Emblica fruit itself will not change. From the cause establishing the difference of the effect, refuting knowledge, thinking, "If there is no difference in the cause, then." It is said, knowledge is explained by being used in a non-man-made way, therefore it is said that for it, because there is no difference in the cause, it is inferred to be man-made. How is there no difference? Because there is no difference in the word. It is said, "Because there is no difference in the word," meaning, because there is no difference from a man-made word. Therefore, it is also established as man-made. If so, how do you know it? It is said, "Because everything is seen to be made by people," the sound is clear and unclear, long and short, etc., and the pacification of poison.
