Furthermore, some might think that detachment from desire, seen merely as appearance, is not the very cause of suffering? Thinking that everything could become like that through the same reasoning, it is said, "If there is fault in that." It is considered that attachment to the self appears to be reversed by detachment from desire, but the possibility of contradicting what is seen is not a valid measure. The power of attachment lies in clinging to self and what belongs to self. To explain that the wisdom associated with clinging to self is the opposite, the term "superior" is distinctive. Destroying and taking near, seeing that the causes of destruction do not exist, is not clinging to self, that is the meaning. Is not the knowledge of self detachment from desire by those who see the faults of the three realms? If one thinks, how can the mind be reversed by one fault? It is said, "If there is a distinction between what is to be taken and rejected." Speaking of self, it is something to be abandoned without consuming the demons of the three realms, but relying on what should be taken near, it becomes something to be taken without consuming the demons. And what should be taken near is also the self or its qualities. It is also said that the power of what should be taken near is the seed of its power from the benefit done by others. Whether it helps or not, it should also be known that the power of what should be taken near, relying on that, is the seed of hatred that goes near turning its back on the harmer. If everything does not change, how does it change? The explanation for this is "by various means." To show that desire and hatred, which are caused by it, arise in the same way, it is said, "desire and hatred." For those who see selflessness, there is no power because there is nothing to be taken, and since there is no turning away, what is the seed of what? The explanation for this is "for those who see selflessness." Is not one who clings to self also detached from desire for the three realms? If there is no other object, how does one rely on something or act? If one thinks so, it is said, "having a faultless object." If there is attachment to self, then one will not have attachment to things that have the aspect of helping the three realms. Think.

Because of attachment to the self, as stated in "How to obtain," etc., this is revealed. Turning away from the aspect of having faults, just as "mine" is, it also applies to "I," which is what is called "however, having faults." Indeed, individual ordinary people see merit and obscure faults, accepting it. But the samadhi that possesses the key to cultivating suffering thinks that one accepts merit after seeing faults, which is what is called "arising from seeing merit." Seeing faults arises from cultivation, so one can see faults. Attachment to the body and senses, etc., of ordinary people is not produced by seeing merit, because there is no following or reversing. This is what is revealed: "That also" refers to attachment. Like this, it is not produced from seeing merit. "For children, etc., also" indicates no reversal. It is not produced from merit, because it is only without reversal, which is what is revealed: "For those with faults also." It is revealed that there is no following, which is what is revealed: "Because there is not." For others, it refers to other bodies and senses, etc. Because there is also no "mine" that possesses merit, it is also revealed that there is no following, which is what is called "for mine also." If it is not produced from seeing merit, then what is it produced from? With the thought of destroying the notion of "mine," thinking that it is abandoned here and not reversed, this is what is called "however, mine." Like attachment, applying no following or reversing to the notion of "mine," this is what is called "therefore." "That also" refers to the notion of "mine." Therefore, not seeing merit, but abandoning because of seeing faults, combining it like this, the meaning is that it is abandoned only from seeing selflessness. It is revealed that the notion of "mine" and attachment again become the producers of seeing merit, which is what is called "Furthermore, non-existent merit is fabricated." The cause of attachment is clinging to the self and what belongs to the self, and cultivating suffering, which is not contradictory to this, is accomplishment, not harming its result, attachment.
