Because it is in the form of having an image. For things that exist in conventional truth, only grasping at form, etc., is direct perception. But the limb-possessing, which is considered the cause of those aggregates, is not made directly perceived, because it is an imputation of other things seen before, such as touch, and because the substance examined by the previous wisdom is also examined. The limb-possessing is different from form, etc., and does not appear in direct perception at any time. Inferential knowledge is knowledge of the sign, and its result, knowledge of the sign-possessing, is not something not previously experienced. This inferential knowledge is direct perception in some cases, and not direct perception in others, such as recognizing fire from sudden smoke. There, there is no previously experienced conceptualization. If there is no conceptualization, how can one recognize from the sign? Because it is seen as it is. Seeing cannot be changed into something else. Why show the difference of conceptualization? Is it for the sake of many examples? No, because the nature is not different. If only many are shown, it would be too extreme. It is not like that, because there is another need. Like this: To establish non-root consciousness, explaining the two is to see the error. To state the establishment of inference, etc., is to establish the first two. For mistaking a mirage for water, others mistakenly think that this is born from the sense faculty. Like this, for the knowledge that arises from the encounter of the sense faculty and the object, which is unerring and has the nature of certainty, is direct perception, in this definition, saying "unerring" is to prevent mistaking a mirage for water. If this is not born from the sense faculty, then it can be removed by the first word alone, so why say "unerring"? If it is said to remove the meaningless two-moon consciousness, it is not so, because it can be removed by simply saying "encounter of the object." By saying the sense faculty, one can remove what is not born from the sense faculty. For those who have objects that exist in conventional truth, others think that it is born from the sense faculty, which is only without dispute. Then, saying inference, etc., is meaningless. Therefore, it is not born from the sense faculty.

If it is said that it is not to establish the other, because inference and other non-sense-born are already established. To this, it is answered: Although inference and others are established, they are stated because they are the means of proof. Everywhere is established, and should be well exemplified. It is not to establish the unestablished with the unestablished. By what are the former two established? What is the cause of confusion here? It is said: Relying on convention and different meanings, the imputation of distinctions, because they are close to direct perception, at times they are the cause of confusion. Relying on convention is having branches, because the cause of their abiding is only convention. Different meaning is water. Imputation is further imputation. Distinction is memory. Water is remembered because it was seen before, but that imputation itself is not, because merely seeing it appears as true. Or conversely, imputation is water, and distinction is having branches, or both are both. The distinction of difference and imputation is sometimes close to the direct perception born from the senses. The closeness itself is the cause of confusion here. It itself or by it causes the cause of confusion. It is the cause of confusion, and it is inferred by the example of it. How is the object of hidden meaning, this distinction of memory and others, having the nature of relying on convention, does not grasp the meaning of direct perception. Thus, without experience and memory, on pot and other phenomena, because it is known to come, it also completely disappears from direct perception. The distinction of inference depends on holding the relationship, and the holding of the relationship itself is convention. Therefore, because the hidden meaning is known from the relationship, it is not direct perception. It becomes that by manifestation. Similarly, on pot and other phenomena, also by any sense consciousness, the form and others are known, and the taste and others that become increased from it are the memory following the previous one. If it is said that the taste and others themselves are memory, and not having branches.
