Because of seeing and abandoning such things, there is no contradiction. Whatever is explained in the scriptures about meditating on aspects such as suffering, that is also similarly possessed or related to it, but that is not suffering with the characteristic of suffering itself, but it is taught considering other sufferings. So, what is the meditation on suffering? It is considered to be the nature of the suffering of conditioning, so it is said to be the meditation on the suffering of conditioning. Those of mine also arise from causes. Momentary things are the independence of causes. That is not for the sake of actual liberation even when meditating. So what is it? Like selflessness, it is a basis. Seeing selflessness itself is the means of arising, because impermanent things that are exhausted in an instant are determined by reason, so whatever is impermanent is the independence of causes, perishing moment by moment, acting without an agent. Therefore, when meditating "This is not me, nor is it mine," one will realize the emptiness of the person. From seeing emptiness, also because there is no seeing of "I" and "mine," one will not develop attachment to anything, nor will one feel weary of anything, and in that way, one will be liberated from the bonds of samsara. Therefore, seeing selflessness itself is liberation through the view of emptiness. All the remaining meditations on impermanence and so on are for that purpose, and are the fruit of seeing emptiness. Merely meditating on impermanence and suffering is the method of seeing emptiness, but it is not the actual cause of liberation, therefore, the Blessed One himself said that suffering arises from the cause of impermanence, and selflessness arises from the cause of suffering. Monks, for example, is form permanent or impermanent? Venerable, it is impermanent. Whatever is impermanent, is it happiness or suffering? Venerable, it is suffering. Whatever is impermanent and suffering, and of the nature of change, it is unreasonable to regard it as "This is mine, this is what I own, this is me." Venerable, it is not so. It is like that.

Because of its permanence, suffering is thoroughly proven, the permanence of selflessness itself, and because suffering itself becomes a means, it is said to be a means of liberation. Therefore, knowing impermanence and suffering itself is not directly the cause of liberation, but it is what becomes the basis of liberation, becoming the cause of seeing emptiness. If it were not so, since it has already been said to be selfless, it would not be said that one should obtain something else that is more excellent, because the teachings will abide in selflessness itself, in which case impermanence and suffering will abide in the "self." Those with the fruit of liberation, because the teachings abide in the pith instructions of the path, will not show another nature of selflessness. Since it is also shown, therefore, it should be understood that the remaining meditation is meaningful. Because one does not become free from desire by meditating on suffering in this way, therefore, one who possesses the meditation on suffering is not free from the desire for "self" and "what is mine." Not free from desire and possessing craving, and whoever possesses attachment to what is mine, relies on all actions, abiding in actions for the sake of obtaining and completely abandoning pleasure and pain. Nourishing karma, desire and aversion, and manifest attachment and other afflictions, since this is the case, then he is not liberated from afflictions and karma. Since they also take rebirth again, since this is the case, then he is a cyclic existence. A person who desires to be free from desire is one who has not abandoned the view of self. Combination is, whoever possesses attachment to "self" and "what is mine" will depend on all actions, like an ordinary person. A person who desires to be free from desire is also one who possesses attachment to "self" and "what is mine," this is the reason of nature. It is not unestablished, because it is already established. Whoever possesses craving and relies on all actions is not liberated from karma and afflictions, like an ordinary person. A person who desires to be free from desire, this person also possesses craving and relies on all actions, this is the reason of nature. Whoever possesses
