Then, the pursuit of "may I become like this" is also pursued when the self exists, not for the sake of others. Therefore, it possesses wisdom that is distinct from the eyes and so on. The argument is: whoever, with respect to something, hopes that it will become more excellent than it is now, and seeks excellence for the sake of others, then it possesses wisdom that is distinct from the self. For example, like Devadatta, according to the order that is spoken of, hoping that cows and so on will become more excellent than himself, seeking excellence for the sake of others. To say that this person also possesses the intention to seek excellence for the eyes and so on is a reason of nature. Because it possesses the wisdom of arising and ceasing. Because he sees that the self exists, and because he possesses the wisdom of the arising and ceasing of hair, nails, limbs, eyes, and so on, therefore it is not one. The argument is: whoever possesses wisdom about the state of something, but also sees something arising and ceasing, then he possesses wisdom that is distinct from it. For example, like a person dwelling on a mountain, possessing wisdom about the arising and ceasing of the abode of the gods. This person, even if he possesses wisdom about the state of the self, also possesses wisdom about the arising and ceasing of the eyes and so on, as well as hair, nails, and so on, this is a reason of nature. Therefore, even if one sees that self and person are one, one will not be attached to "mine." Because even if it is not there, it still exists. The argument is: whatever does not change even if something is not there. For example, even if there is no barley seed, a rice sprout will still arise. The person's attachment to "mine" will change even if there is no identical wisdom of the eyes and so on, as well as hair, nails, and so on, this is because of the perception of contradictory pervasion. Then, what are the other causes of "mine"? The person's attachment and changes, and the inner branches of the object, such as the senses, are the "mine" that accomplish enjoyment. By nature, by nature, attachment changes accordingly. Therefore, attachment to the self is not a state that arises merely from seeing that the self exists, because that is the self.

is the cause of attachment to self. That is the obstacle to detachment from self, and if so, then asceticism is fruitless. Isn't it the case that after seeing the suffering in which beings currently dwell, one sees that they will become detached from desire? If so, why is it said that detachment from desire is not achieved through the practice of suffering? It is said: From what does suffering arise now? It is said that whatever aversion arises in a person from seeing faults is not detachment from desire, but rather anger. What kind of anger is it? The weariness of being displeased with that suffering is also anger. For example, the noble Sthavira school says that all displeasure is the same as anger. Such a thing is not detachment from desire, because its nature is different from that. The Blessed One said that even though such displeasure is unwholesome, it is the cause of the arising of virtuous dharmas, and therefore it should be relied upon. At any time when aversion arises in this person, there is also attachment to self in this person. Why? Because he is looking for another time. Because he is looking for another state of happiness other than the present state of suffering, he has not abandoned attachment. The anger that arises from the nature of aversion, that anger is the cause and agent of the arising of suffering, and thus suffering is the cause itself. Logically speaking, anger is also not very compliant. If you ask what it is, then it only dwells in that. As long as this suffering lasts, the aversion of this person will also last. At any time when the cause of its entry and the opposing condition are near, when suffering ceases, if that suffering ceases, then the nature of that person himself, born from attachment to self, will also rely on his own nature. Thus, he is not detached from desire. If aversion arising from suffering is anger and not detachment from desire, then what is meant by detachment from desire? Equally from all
