A Commentary on the Difficult Points of the Compendium on Valid Cognition by Lhawangpo A Commentary on the Difficult Points of the Compendium on Valid Cognition Lhawangpo A commentary on the Compendium on Valid Cognition, Volume Twelve. When the teacher was explaining the treatise on the characteristics of valid cognition, he elaborated on the reason, inference. Now, he is beginning to explain the verses of homage, starting with "valid cognition." "Becoming valid" means being born as valid. Because it is similar to valid cognition, it is valid cognition, i.e., the Bhagavan. So, what is the nature of valid cognition? What is used to vow that it is similar to valid cognition? Therefore, it is said, "Valid cognition is knowledge that is free from deception." That which deceives is deception. Whichever knowledge possesses deception, that is deceptive. That which does not possess deception is non-deceptive, meaning it does not deceive. Non-deception also only functions after the object has been completely determined, so the object's own ability is established. As the desired object, the non-deception of its nature is the dharma of the object, and recognizing it as such, the non-deception of knowledge is the dharma of the subject. Which possesses it, that is knowledge that possesses non-deception. Because inference does not completely determine the coarse nature of the object, it is not pervasive, so it is said to be unreasonable. Because it does not deceive the person, non-deception is the distinction between direct perception and inference, which are characterized by encountering the clearly desired object. To explain it in detail, it is said, "Abiding in the ability to accomplish the purpose is non-deceptive," that is, to understand the purpose to be accomplished by the object that is completely determined by valid cognition. For example, direct perception recognizes the ability of fire to burn, cook, etc., and functions, its subjective direct perception is the same as the warmth of touch, etc. Also, at certain times, some people equate similar forms, etc., with people, and the function of inference that mistakenly determines fire from smoke is non-deceptive. Because direct perception itself has various causes of confusion, it may be deceptive, so it is to be recognized as valid cognition by the subsequent subjective valid cognition that functions for the benefit of the object, but not by inference. So, is it its nature?

The sign of the fruit is the very nature of the object, and, the fruit of the object is definitely the cause of the consciousness possessing the sign. Therefore, without the object becoming like that, there can be no subsequent inference. Therefore, it does not depend on the entry of the later valid cognition. In other places, if there is no definite difference when non-manifest and manifest ones arise there, then know that it is not deceived by the entry of the later valid cognition. If it is said that the later perception also has no difference from the previous perception, because it does not enter the object, but doubts and cannot be certain that it is not deceptive, then, it is not so, because both do not enter the state of having no object. For a place without fire, making an entry with the apprehension of having fire, from this, it is impossible for the later consciousness with the object of entering burning and cooking, etc., to arise, because that is the very basis of having an object. Even if it arises, it is only non-deceptive, because it obtains the accomplishment of purpose as desired, and, the object is only the cause of that much. Thus, if the latter is the very object of having an object, then, the former is the one with non-deception. If the meaning previously apprehended is not realized by the later valid cognition, then, how can it be the object of accomplishing the purpose that is completely determined by it, because that accomplishment of purpose is not deceptive from that, is that a valid cognition? It is not so, because those who apply names enter without difference, following the names, they say that those that appear earlier and later in time enter as one. In reality, they are different. Thus, the object of the later valid cognition, if the object of the previous valid cognition does not exist, then it also does not exist, therefore that is also its object. This is a close examination. Therefore, since the object has been established previously, the first one is the valid cognition, because it enters into accomplishing the purpose from that. By what there is no external object, the object of the meaning completely determined by its valid cognition is not the cause of the later valid cognition and is not deceptive, however, the consciousness that appears to accomplish the purpose as desired is the cause. For whom there is not that, that is not a valid cognition, so there is no contradiction. Even if there is no external object, it is still so.
