Being in (that state). It is said to be free from attachment. Having said this, for those things called "my things," which are close to the aggregates of grasping, for the things that are close to being needed for existence, one remains in a state of equanimity. How does one remain equally? Because one has destroyed taking and rejecting. Whatever is weary from certain things, that is rejection. This is mine and belongs to me, that clinging is taking, therefore it is for the cause of abandoning them. Therefore, like sandalwood and an axe. It means like sandalwood and an axe. Connect them with being free from attachment. For example, one person with a joyful mind, smears one hand with sandalwood, while another hates it and cuts off the other hand, how do those people treat them? Just like sandalwood and an axe, neither satisfied with one nor particularly attached to the other. However, if there is no characteristic of attachment and anger towards either, remaining in a state of equanimity, then, the one who desires liberation will treat sandalwood and an axe equally. To show that meaning, it is said, "Like sandalwood and an axe." The Arhats are said to be delighted, but that is not attachment to conditioned objects. If one cannot abandon self-grasping etc. by meditating on suffering, then why did you yourself previously say, "Merit, fault, and what belongs to them, abandoning desire, hatred, etc., because they are not seen on the objects"? Did you yourself say that meditating on suffering is the method of abandoning desire etc., and then say that meditating on suffering is pacifying, isn't this contradictory? It is not so, because seeing merit in this way is accomplishing one's own happiness. Here, it is not wanting to see merit, who would want to exhaust desire from seeing faults? So what is it? Permanence, happiness, self, selfhood, etc. are merits, seeing those fields of merit, either together or separately seeing merit, its antidote is impermanence itself.
