The statement "I wish to be free from suffering and completely harmless" is called pervasive contradiction. If one knows that attachment has faults, then I am without fault, and for me, any attachment is with faults. Because it has faults, it should be abandoned by the wise, like a finger bitten by a snake, others think so. Dissatisfied with this, if attachment has faults, then what will happen? This is how the question is asked. Because attachment to self itself has faults, it is said that it should be abandoned. If it is said that therefore the proof is not established, then, for the object of attachment to self, the self itself is without an object. Without refutation, it cannot be abandoned. It is not possible to abandon the arising of attachment to its object, because its nature is merely existence. The explanation is that for any fault of the object to which attachment arises, if it is not seen, then it is not possible to abandon attachment to it, just as a lustful person does not see the fault of the object of attachment to a beautiful woman. This person also does not see the fault of the object of attachment to self, which is called not seeing the cause. By "merit and fault" etc., this doctrine is established. If asked what kind of greed, hatred, etc. are, then greed associated with merit and fault, some are produced in connection with seeing merit, and hatred is also produced in connection with seeing fault. By saying "etc.", just like oneself, jealousy etc. arise because of seeing the cause. Like this, the entering greed and hatred etc., for their abandonment, the method of abandonment is clearly wanting to abandon here. For example, for the object, there is no seeing of fault and merit, for any object, because seeing merit produces greed, then because there is no seeing of merit, greed will disappear, and hatred is also produced because of seeing fault, and not seeing fault is also the same. What is the order, there is no outside. For things that are not wanted, such as thorns

It is like taking away and discarding (bad) things, but we do not do this with the merits of the mind. Therefore, the attachment to self that arises from the perspective of believing in a self, as long as the reason for believing in a self is not broken, from where is it eliminated? The argument is: Through seeing what does a person develop a desire for what? If there is seeing of it, there will be no absence (of desire), for example, because seeing brings happiness, a man will develop a desire for a beautiful woman. Here, attachment to self also arises from the perspective of believing in a self, which is called an example of pervasive contradiction. If attachment arises from seeing the merits of attachment to self, then when its faults are seen, it will disappear. Like this, attachment, etc., do not arise from merits, but from seeing the merits of things, that is, attachment arises from seeing the merits of the object. The reason for seeing the merits of attachment to self is also merely seeing that there is a self. That is not without end. For the endless cause of attachment to self, called attachment to self, then, what cause is used to stop the effect? Therefore, the effect is stopped by making the cause incomplete. If the reason for this attachment to self, believing that there is a self, does not exist, then it can only be non-abandonment of attachment to self. The argument is: Whatever is the cause of something, if that cause is complete and without lack, it will not be without (that effect), for example, a sprout is produced by the complete and without lack collection of seeds, etc. Attachment to self is also caused by believing in a self, which is called an example of pervasive contradiction. This is the establishment of the tenet of "it has not broken the object," etc. Attachment is with faults, and whatever has faults should be abandoned by the wise, for example, a finger bitten by a worm. Attachment to self is also with faults, therefore it should be abandoned, to this statement, "For attachment to self, seeing that it has faults, through what is it abandoned?" (The answer is:) It is the basis of suffering.
