Absence is the non-manifestation of a cause. Those three reasons are also not established. Because it possesses a cause. Because afflictions are impermanent, permanence is not established. Wherever there is a cause, that is not permanent, like a lamp. If it is said that faults also possess a cause, then it is the perception of contradictory pervasion. It is also not unestablished, because if it is not sudden, then everything should manifest in all times and places with all its own nature. To eliminate permanence, occasional manifestations, etc., should be stated as reasons. Among them, afflictions are desire, hatred, and ignorance. The view of self and what belongs to self is ignorance. Attachment is the clinging to self and what belongs to self, preceded by it. Tormenting oneself by harming the object of attachment, preceded by it, is hatred. Thus, afflictions and near afflictions preceded by the view of self will also arise strongly. Among all, the manifestation of clinging to self with pride is the root. The view of self is the cause of faults, because when it manifests, others will also manifest. Commentary on the Compendium on Valid Cognition, Volume Seventeen. The connection is: if something manifests when something else manifests, and even if other remaining causes manifest, that thing does not manifest, then the thing that does not manifest is transformed from that thing. For example, when a seed manifests, a sprout also manifests. In the state of meditating on emptiness, or in the state of non-indication, even if the grasping of self and the grasping of mine manifest, the faults of attachment to self, etc., will manifest. Even if there are other things such as the senses, that fault will not manifest, then manifestation is the reason of nature. Therefore, the view of self is the cause of all faults. The opposite of this cause is seeing the absence of self, because by becoming accustomed to it, the cause of faults will be exhausted. Therefore, there is a way to eliminate faults.

Moreover, the second reason is also not established. The syllogism is: whatever has the nature of habitually conflicting causes, its continuum will be severed, like grains, etc. Attachment, etc., also have habitually conflicting causes, this is the reason of nature. The syllogism itself, for those dharmas that are not like that, if one clings to unreal appearances, it is because there is a conflicting condition, like the illusion of a snake on a rope. For the aggregates of impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness, clinging to permanence, pleasure, self, and purity, these inverted cognitions of attachment, etc., cling to unreal appearances for dharmas that are not like that, this is the reason of nature. The previous reason is not established, and this reason is also not established, because as the situation shows, some have already been shown in some places, and will also be shown. The continuum of grains, etc., is temporarily interrupted due to the nature of ability. The previous contradiction with what is to be established is also not established, the syllogism is: whatever does not perceive something that has the characteristic of being able to be perceived, then it is not truly present in that thing, such as seeking pleasure in the nature of suffering, seeking water in fire. The continuum of grains, etc., which has the characteristic of being able to be perceived, is later completely unperceived, this is the non-perception of nature. By knowing the nature of the cause, one can know the characteristics of the causes of faults, and knowing it will necessarily know the antidote cognition of the causes of faults. Whatever has the nature of the cause, the characteristic of reason, it is the nature of being prevented by knowing its non-characteristic, such as wind, etc. Attachment, etc., also have the nature of the cause, the characteristic of reason. Thus, since the complete knowledge of the means has been established, the third reason is also not established. Using the words "protection," etc., to explain the fourth meaning, what is protection? What and

Therefore, why is the Sugata said to be the protector? The answer is: The protector himself speaks of the path, and after truly understanding it, teaches the path, meaning he fully reveals it. This is known as the miracle of subsequent teaching. He protects sentient beings by truly teaching the method of cessation of suffering, guiding them to engage in beneficial deeds. The Sugata does this not without purpose, because there is no need to lie, he does not speak falsely, and he does not teach the path in a reversed manner, because there is no reason to teach that way. If it is said that the cause of teaching a wrong path is a fault, or not understanding the object of the path, then that has already been abandoned by him. Therefore, if he teaches in another way for his own happiness, there is no need for that, so how could he deceive? If it is thought that even if he knows, he will deceive because he has no compassion, then the Sugata does not have that situation, because: Because he has compassion in his heart, also for the benefit of others, he is diligent in all activities. The Blessed One diligently engages in all activities to eliminate afflictions, and this is for the benefit of sentient beings, to reveal the path through altruistic methods, abiding in the nature of compassion, how could he lie? Diligence means that when there is no cause to lie or no need to lie, he does not lie, just as when he speaks the truth. In this case of the Sugata, there is also no cause to speak untruthfully, or there is no need, because no cause is found. For whose benefit does he accomplish things with compassion, and for the completion of that thing, he will not completely abandon the compassion for that object, so he will not deceive him, like a mother preparing food for her child to eat. The difference of the person who wants to speak is also, for the benefit of sentient beings, with compassion, the method of eliminating afflictions for sentient beings, that is the object of
