Then, if asked how your valid cognition is established, we realize it from ourselves in the manner of self-nature. From self-awareness, the very "awareness of being" of that cognition called "valid cognition" is established, but not "valid cognition" itself. If it is thought that since there is no difference between "awareness of being" and "valid cognition," then "valid cognition" itself is also apprehended, that is true. Because direct perception is not the place where valid cognition arises, even though it is apprehended, nevertheless, for those apprehended aspects, that which generates certainty, because it is the place of entry, is considered "valid cognition," otherwise it is not. Even if there is no difference from what is seen, if the aspect is what is sought, and there are causes of certainty such as habituation and circumstances, then it is certainty, otherwise it is not. Therefore, when focusing on "awareness of being," even if "valid cognition" has already been apprehended, it is like not being apprehended, because there is no certainty. Then, how can "valid cognition" itself be determined? It is through terminology, that is, through the cognition that arises later and has the object of accomplishing the meaning. If "valid cognition" itself is realized through terminology, then the scriptures become meaningless, therefore they should not be created. It is not meaningless, because the scriptures are what dispel ignorance. If one enters without understanding the nature of the valid cognition that is the place of entry, one may be deceived. Those who wish to enter should understand the nature of valid cognition and what appears as valid cognition before entering. That is to say, from the scriptures that have the nature of teaching the Dharma that clearly shows the nature of self, through the nature as explained, one recognizes that one will not be deceived, and then enters in some way. Therefore, scriptures are created because they are the valid cognition of the realized ones, and they can dispel another kind of ignorance, so in this way they are not meaningless. If valid cognition is very famous and is also terminology, then the scriptures are useless, and those who say such things are not reasonable in saying so. Therefore, valid cognitions are not very famous, because they make contradictory definitions, so those who think they are wise are also wrong.
