At that time, because of being in accordance with what is to be proven, saying "that which has the dharma of that thing is an example" becomes contradictory. Thus, the dharma of what is to be proven, such as impermanence, having birth, etc., will not become a dharma, because that is the nature of sound. The dharma of what is to be proven will not become the dharma of the example, that is, having that nature. If the subject of the dharma is what is to be proven, then at that time, if the subject of the dharma is what is to be proven, because of being in accordance with the example, what is to be proven cannot be said to be the reason that can establish it. Why? Because sound is not established, by what is what is to be proven the reason that can establish it? Because sound is already established. Like this, when both the dharma and the subject of the dharma are what is to be proven, the fault of both becoming what is to be proven is unavoidable. If it exists in this way, then will the aggregate also become what is to be proven? When saying that, even if the aggregate is what is to be proven, if it is acknowledged, then the other is the difference of the other. It will become wanting to take the subject of the dharma, which is the difference of the dharma of what is to be proven, or the subject of the dharma, or the dharma differentiated by the subject of the dharma, as what is to be proven, because from those things that have the aggregate, the aggregate itself is not another meaning. When both the dharma and the subject of the dharma are what is to be proven, the characteristics of the reason and the example are not established. Therefore, the door of having birth, etc., of the subject of the dharma differentiated by the dharma, does not have a corresponding dharma in the example. For the subject of the dharma having such a form, the other reason is not established, therefore it is not the characteristic of the reason. The subject of the dharma differentiated by impermanence does not have a corresponding dharma in the example, therefore it is not the characteristic of the example. Commentary on the Compendium on Valid Cognition, Volume Thirty-nine. If like this, for the nature of having birth, etc., because there is no sound to be proven. If it is assumed that the subject of the dharma has function, how do we approach one side, because what is to be proven is only one side?

This is an explanation of the term for what needs to be established by one who enters. At that time, if the treatise is sufficient, then what is the use of defining words? After realizing and understanding oneself appropriately, the world itself will enter. I have spoken the defining words because I have fully grasped the nature of the Dharma that can be established in one aspect, and that is reasonable. Others are not like that. Therefore, how many words should be used to express it? Furthermore, is it necessary to first determine that what is to be established is the statement itself, that is, the vow itself? Or, is it necessary to later determine that what is to be established is the statement that shows the vow itself? If so, then for the time being, the former determination is not the meaning of grasping the opposite of what is established, but the meaning of what is not established. In this way, for its meaning, the meaning of the vow is understood as what needs to be established. That is understanding its meaning. Why? If it is established by the power of showing the means of establishment, then at that time, because it is not a point of contention. In order to establish it, if the means of establishment is not spoken, then the means of establishment will also be spoken, and that will be understood as the unestablished itself. Furthermore, if it is grasped that showing what needs to be established is the vow, then the words of the means of establishment will show that it is the vow. If the words of the means of establishment themselves do not have a vow, then there is no doubt about the means of establishment, that is, the words of the means of establishment, being the vow itself. Why? Because the words of reason, etc., pervade this object. Therefore, for this reason, it is necessary to determine beforehand. Because of it, because reason, etc., abandon this meaning, there is no need to speak of the definition of the vow. Because whoever determines beforehand is meaningless, therefore, because of the power of reason, showing that what needs to be established is the vow itself, for this later determination, saying that showing what needs to be established itself, is having the result of pervasion. If it is not possessed, it is having the result of eliminating the different, if it is like that, then showing the unestablished reason and example will become the vow itself. It is the vow itself.
