It is for the purpose of generating offspring. That fruit is also said to hold the cause. That which establishes itself as its own nature is held by it. For example, in the world, it is said that a son who is born resembling his father holds the image of his father. Therefore, it is said that the son born by it also holds its image, but not that the son's hand holds the father. Similarly, this also applies to knowledge and the knowable. Attachment, hatred, ignorance, and happiness, as well as suffering, etc., are self-cognizant, because they do not depend on the sense faculties. The statement "happiness, etc., do not depend on others" is explained by "happiness, etc., do not depend on others," and so on. Whatever knowable, whatever knowledge holds the designation of sound in whatever way, it will hold it by mixing with it, and thus it will be mixed with speech. But the self-cognizance of attachment, etc., is not like that. If so, happiness, etc., do not depend on others, it is not common, but it is a synonym for the state of not being present at the time of designation. Therefore, this is not expressed by sound, because this designation also becomes an object. When the nature of happiness, etc., has not arisen, self-cognizance does not make it an object, because the essence of the nature of happiness, etc., is also without any difference in nature. Therefore, from where do speech and combination arise? Even when generating the nature of happiness, etc., self-cognizance is not mixed with speech. If so, it would grasp the speech and combine with it. Even if it holds speech, it is because it is momentary. Since it does not exist, or it is not the nature of happiness, etc., then who combines what with whom? Therefore, the nature of attachment, etc., is incapable of expressing. For that reason, whatever is the self-nature of those attachments, etc., that is not related to speech, not mixed with speech. Combination refers to the fact that if something does not hold the sign of something, then it will not discriminate that, just as the eye's consciousness does not discriminate smell. The self-cognizance of attachment, etc., also does not hold signs.

Saying "it is not" refers to the opposite of the pervasive contradiction. Whatever you say that happiness and so on are valid cognitions, if they are not knowers, then they are not the nature of knowledge. However, they are, cognitions with the same object, because the knowledge that is in conjunction with happiness and so on, and that has an aggregation, correctly cognizes that whatever is the one nature of things, is the nature of what is to be measured. Therefore, if they do not cognize external objects, how can they cognize their own nature? By what means can they become valid cognitions? This is an unestablished reason, so say only the Vaiśeṣikas. The determination of the nature of things is because the nature of the cause is determined. If it is not so, but is sudden, then the determination of place, time, and nature is not possible. Therefore, one should undoubtedly assume that from what arises what, and what kind of object is seen, other similar things also arise from similar things, and different and similar things also arise from different and similar things. When one thinks in this way, the object that and that is real, that and that unreal cause is born. That and that which is not real, are those things that are not that and that, and whatever has the nature of that and that which is not real, that is the object that and that which is real. The nature of that and that which is not real is also those, and the cause is also those, therefore, that and that unreal cause. What is born from those is, that and that unreal cause is born. For what reason is it that, knowledge is born from a non-different, inseparable cause. Why are happiness and suffering and so on not known? It is not the nature of not being known, but it only becomes the nature of consciousness. Combination is, whatever is born from a cause that is not different from what, becomes the nature of not being different from it. For example, like what is born from a cause that is not different from one fire, is not a second fire. Happiness and suffering and desire and so on are also born from a cause that is not different from consciousness, this is the reason of nature. By "how is the nature" and so on, the establishment of the reason is closely connected. Happiness
