It is the remainder of the word. That is change, but without dependence on symbols and memory of it, the sensory knowledge that produces the holding of form will not change. If that is the case, how is it that if sensory intelligence, the symbol of form depends on memory? If it is the function of eye consciousness, the symbol of form and memory are dependent. If it is not an independent ability, dependent on symbols and memory, sensory knowledge arises, and form becomes the ability, that is the meaning. At that time, what becomes the ability is this form. For whom? For memory itself. Like what? Like a sign, for example, the sign of peacock feathers, etc., the association is closely related to memory, but sometimes it is not actually the sign that produces knowledge, like that. That is why it arises in the direction of manifestation. Memory is from the outside that arises in the direction of manifestation of things, becoming that memory itself, and sometimes it is not the object of sensory intelligence that changes. Does sensory intelligence change from memory? Sometimes it is not, it does not change. Sensory knowledge changes from memory, it is not necessary to produce, sometimes it will produce. Furthermore, at what time does the thing not actually produce sensory intelligence, at that time, from that memory at other times it will become sensory intelligence. Why? Because sometimes it may be distracted. When memory arises from things, because it may be interrupted by the distraction of other objects immediately following, sometimes it will not arise, or, seeing things connected by memory, it will change later. Because there is no difference in the production of sensory knowledge after memory. That is change, if the sequence is two causes, the memory that was previously the cause of the sensory knowledge of form is determined, and then it becomes the cause of sensory knowledge itself, if that is the case, that is also non-existent. In that way, if memory is closely connected, and then form and other things become the cause of sensory intelligence, at that time the manifestation itself becomes the cause of sensory knowledge, or not even later. Why? Because there is no difference. At that time

Now, is that thing inherently capable of generating sensory consciousness regardless of whether it is prior or subsequent? If not, if it already possesses that nature from the beginning, then just as it does later, it would also generate (sensory consciousness) earlier. If it does not have that nature, then it would not generate (sensory consciousness) earlier either, because there would be no difference from later, so it would show that it would not generate it even at some times. Although it would change in that way, if the consciousness of another moment is the cause of a moment, then this fault would occur. When things change differently in each moment, if the first moment generates memory and the later moment generates sensory consciousness, then, in that respect, if that thing itself is the cause of sensory consciousness, then for that thing, memory is meaningless and unnecessary. Why? Because, like this, if it is thought that the memory of a term is to establish the thing that the term refers to, and it is thought that applying a sound term to anything is to apply that sound to that thing, then, if it is thought that the memory of a term has that meaning, like this, sensory consciousness does not grasp the meaning of the object of memory. What is it then? Because memory takes other states that occur at different times from it as objects, therefore memory becomes meaningless here. Furthermore, if one grasps the difference without a term, then in the case of permanent phenomena, only that which has a term applied to it is to be grasped together with sound, and because there is no term for the difference, that difference would become something to be grasped separately because no term has been applied, and sensory consciousness without a term would grasp it. Or, the meaning of "if one grasps the difference without a term" is that, in the case of momentary phenomena, for the person who wants the first moment to generate memory, there is no term for the nature of not grasping the difference. Because no term has been applied. If it is thought that memory will grasp the nature of not applying a term, then that is also unreasonable. Or, if one wants the later moment to generate sensory consciousness, then for that, no sound term has been applied to the difference, and because no term has been applied, then also

If, in that way, one clings to the un-imputed meaning, then it means "clinging to the meaning without imputed distinctions." Regarding this, for one who has mindfulness and desire, in the second aspect, what is the object of what? In the third aspect, what is the need of what? It is neither of the two, that is its meaning. It is not that sound is established on the distinction, but if it is certain that it is on the general, then it is merely understanding the general, not the distinction, such a conceptual thought is also not good. In that case, it is not clinging to the independently existing general. Then what is it? It is also clinging to the distinction. If it is not like that, if it is merely clinging to the general, then consciousness should not rely on the distinction. In that case, one should want to cling to the general mixed with the distinction. In that case, whatever clings to the distinction that is not the object of sound, that is not mixed with speech. Therefore, for names and forms, relying only on the eye and relying only on the form, without needing to rely on remembering signs, eye consciousness will arise, this is the conclusion. Taking "direct perception is free from conceptual thought" as the topic, it is explained by the meaning of "on what there are no those conceptual thoughts." However, why is it called direct perception because it arises depending on both, and not called depending on the object? This will be explained by "if" and so on. If it directly produces knowledge, like the sense faculty, the object also has the ability. Just as the sense faculty is the cause of producing consciousness, so is the form. Then, why does it depend on both? Because arising depends on the eye and form, therefore consciousness is not explained by the form. Is it not establishing a name? This is a refutation. Answering with "to make understand" and so on, worldly people do not apply names to things without a reason. Then what is it? If this sound does not have the ability to make understand this time when it should be said, then, seeing that it makes understand, one will definitely apply a name. To make understand, when indicating sense consciousness, is the name of the sense faculty. Its dharma is also applied by it. Since making understand is universal, sound must be applied to the universal that should be applied.
