Chapter Twenty-eight. Furthermore, those who say that manifestation is with conceptualization, and those who say that manifestation without conceptualization is not self-awareness, for both of these opponents, seeing past forms and so on is not established by manifestation. Why? Because manifestation is that which has a present object. Nor is it established by inference, like this: seeing the past, and without example, and without example, if even a little of the consciousness of manifestation is not established, then what is taken as an example to state? The basis of all signs also becomes unestablished, because the subject itself is not established. The absence of a sign is like this: because the connection with concomitance, counter-concomitance, the subject, and relation are not established, it is not inference. Because of this, manifestation and inference do not exist, by what valid cognition is the cognition of objects, the seeing of objects, established? It is not established by any means. Therefore, for that knowledge, it is not manifestation, nor does it possess a sign. Thus, because seeing is without conceptualization, those who walk will become blind and mute. If the very nature of that, the mind that has appearance, immediately, holds onto forms and so on, then, if just as the Sutra masters, the sense faculties and objects arise earlier and generate knowledge, and the knowledge that arises from the nature of following closely to forms and so on also holds onto that, in the same way, here also, the previously arisen mind of forms and so on also generates another subsequent conceptual mind that has the nature of following its own aspect. Appearing as that nature, that is, following the nature of the previous mind, that which has the nature of arising later, the other conceptual mind generated by the power of immediacy, also (holds) the previous mind, those are also the mind of forms and so on, when holding in this way, what fault will there be? The previous mind does not hold. Thus it is said, when the object becomes manifest, when many seeings quickly cease, at that time, the last seeing, I saw this form, holding in this way, is successively, the previous seeings also in this way for a long time.
